Arsenic “Eating” and “Breathing” Microbes: from Mesophile to Extremophile presented by Professor Chad Saltikov, Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology, UC Santa Cruz

Professor Chad Saltikov investigates the molecular biology of microbial processes controlling the fate and transport of arsenic in the environment. By converting the chemical form of arsenic found in soil and sediments, naturally occurring microbes have been shown to exacerbate arsenic contamination of ground water, resulting in serious health crises in Asia and Latin America. Data from the Saltikov laboratory are designed to help devise strategies to ameliorate contamination of drinking water.
