SUMMARY:EARTH MONTH: 15th Annual Municipal Green Building Conference and Expo
DESCRIPTION:15th Annual MGBCE: Road to Greenbuild\, Water Resilience For Cities\nThe Municipal Green Building Conference and Expo returns in its 15th year to offer knowledge\, resources\, recognition\, and networking opportunities. The effects of global warming on water supply represent one of the greatest challenges for cities in Southern CA. City administrations are seeking ways to meet the demand for water from growing populations while grappling with the challenges of sea level rise\, extreme weather events\, drought\, salination\, and reduced food security. We are seeking recommendations and case studies to building resilience through improved water resource management\, water use in building systems\, flood management\, and climate resilience at the building\, city\, and regional scale. We also welcome all green building related topics such as energy\, materials\, occupant health\, biomimicry\, and more. MGBCE is Southern California’s longest-running and largest sustainability and green building event focusing on the unique needs and concerns for municipalities\, architects\, contractors\, and engineers. \nHosted annually by the Los Angeles Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council and Southern California Gas Company\, this event brings together thought-leaders in the industry with local government agencies\, municipal policy makers\, policy implementers\, leading architects\, and building industry professionals to further the development of a sustainable future for Southern California. \nRegistration required. \n

SUMMARY:EARTH MONTH: Learn-at-Lunch Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden Tour presented by UCLA Staff Assembly & sponsored by UCLA Life Sciences
DESCRIPTION:  \nIt is that time of the year again when UCLA Staff Assembly partners with UCLA Life Sciences to coordinate a tour of the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden (MEMBG) for staff and faculty. This year the event falls on Earth Day\, making it the perfect opportunity to celebrate the beautiful planet we live on. \nMEMBG is a living museum\, having special collections designed to assist the undergraduate teaching mission at UCLA and to augment the capability for research on campus.  So let’s enjoy the beautiful spring weather in Los Angeles and take a leisurely walk to explore MEMBG together.  If you want to enjoy your lunch at the gardens after\, the patio is also reserved for us from 1-2pm. \nThe Botanical Garden also offers a wide range of tours to our wider community\, from K-12 school groups to senior centers.\nSpace is extremely limited\, so please register ASAP! \n

SUMMARY:EARTH MONTH: Solar Engineering: An Overview of Risks and Benefits with David Keith
DESCRIPTION:  \nFree and open to the public – RSVPs Required\nLunch served \n  \nJoin David Keith\, author of A Case for Climate Engineering\, in conversation with UCLA Law Professor Ted Parson about the costs and risks of solar geoengineering and how geoengineering efforts might fit into a larger program for managing climate change. \nClimate engineering—which could slow the pace of global warming by injecting reflective particles into the upper atmosphere—has emerged in recent years as an extremely controversial technology. A leading scientist long concerned about climate change\, David Keith argues that the potential benefits to the world’s most vulnerable constitute a moral imperative to put climate engineering on the table and consider it responsibly. \nDavid is a Professor of Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School\, where he leads a fast-growing team of researchers working at the intersection of climate science and technology with a focus on the science and public policy of solar geoengineering. He has worked near the interface between climate science\, energy technology and public policy for twenty years. He took first prize in Canada’s national physics prize exam\, won MIT’s prize for excellence in experimental physics\, and was listed as one of TIME magazine’s Heroes of the Environment in 2009. David also serves as the Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Physics at the Harvard Paulson School. He divides his time between Boston and Calgary\, where he serves as President of Carbon Engineering\, a start-up company developing industrial-scale technologies for capture of CO2 from ambient air. \n  \nSponsored by the Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at UCLA Law.
