SUMMARY:Workshop: Accelerating Electric Vehicle Adoption with Curb Management
DESCRIPTION:Join the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) on Thursday August 10\, from 10am to 12pm PDT for Accelerating EV Adoption with Automated Curb Management Strategies Workshop. \nCities across the nation are working to reduce transportation emissions and encourage the adoption of zero emission vehicles\, even as pollution and traffic congestion associated with e-commerce deliveries and rideshare driving is increasing. \nThis virtual workshop will share early lessons from a U.S. Department of Energy Vehicle Technologies Office (DOE VTO) grant that LACI is administering together with partners in local government\, startups\, academia\, community orgs\, and more to scale zero emission delivery zones via applications and integration of curb management in Los Angeles\, Pittsburgh\, and Santa Monica. The workshop programming will: \n\nShowcase technical and policy-based curb management frameworks developed by Carnegie Mellon University\, National Renewable Energy Laboratory\, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory\, University of Southern California METRANS\, and Cityfi\nFeature conversations between city agencies and LACI startup Automotus\, which is helping cities manage the rapid rise in commercial vehicle activity using fully automated solutions\, and\nFacilitate discussions on future pilot efforts as well as the curb management challenges and opportunities that are taking place in other cities.\n\n  \nPlease register to receive the workshop Zoom URL. Zoom details and login instructions will be sent via email in the days prior to the event. \nREGISTER HERE \n  \nABOUT THE EV PILOT STUDY \nThis pilot study to improve curb management strategies that will bolster EV adoption for last mile delivery\, reduce air pollution in disadvantaged communities and environmental justice areas\, and increase productivity at the curb. The pilot also serves as a cleantech demonstration opportunity for automated curb management solutions utilizing Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology that can empower cities to reduce emissions and traffic congestion and increase safety in communities. \nNow at the midway point of the pilot study\, LACI and our project partners invite city transportation departments and other interested stakeholders across the country to learn more about our initial learnings\, and tools and resources created by project partners. We will also share information on LACI’s newly-announced Zero Emission Delivery City Challenge and how cities can apply to get involved in our first cohort. \nZERO EMISSIONS DELIVERY CITY CHALLENGE RFI \nAs another expansion of LACI’s work on zero emissions delivery with Santa Monica\, LACI released the Zero Emissions Delivery City Challenge RFI\, which aims to identify an additional 5-7 U.S. cities with which to pilot zero emission delivery solutions by 2025. \nCities selected from the RFI process will be part of a national network that shares lessons learned and new ideas\, works together to attract funding\, and collaborates to problem solve for the electrification of delivery systems in different city constructs. While this RFI is a separate initiative from this webinar\, the two opportunities provide a great example of how cities will benefit from being a part of the Zero Emissions National Network to share tools\, resources and lessons learned that will support accomplishing Zero Emission Transportation goals . \nWORKSHOP AGENDA \n10:00a – 10:15a: Workshop Overview & Introductions – LACI will set the stage for the event by going over the agenda\, objective and have introductions with all attendees in the room. \n10:15a – 10:25a: Overview of VTO Project Accomplishment – LACI staff will provide a background overview on the project\, its goals and milestones\, partnerships and its ambitions later this year and next. \n10:25a – 10:30a: Presentation on Zero Emissions Delivery City Challenge – LACI Staff will present on Zero Emission Delivery City Challenge\, what the RFI Opportunity was and how the challenge will help support cities in delivery system electrification. \n10:30a – 10:55a: Presentation on Metric Methodology\, ALPR Resources\, & Tools – VTO partners Cityfi and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) will provide a presentation on Metric Methodology\, standard and elected metrics last mile EV adoption and ALPR Tools. \n10:55a – 11:30a: Presentation on ALPR technology\, Modeling Approach\, & Policy Structure – Partners Automotus\, the City of LA\, the City of Santa Monica\, and the City of Pittsburgh present on ALPR technology\, modeling approach\, policy structure and how each city is working on enforcement. \n11:30a – 12:00p: Break Out Discussions – An opportunity for the cities to network amongst each other and for us to learn a bit more about their challenges and what resources should be included in the roadmap.

SUMMARY:Food and Film: Farming - Harvest
DESCRIPTION:In-person:\nPre-screening Q&A with chef Alice Waters and farmer Alex Weiser (Weiser Family Farms and Tehachapi Grain Project)\, moderated by Laurie Ochoa (L.A. Times). \nAdmission is free. No advance reservations. Your seat will be assigned to you when you pick up your ticket at the box office. Seats are assigned on a first come\, first served basis. The box office opens one hour before the event. \nHarvest\nRegain\, France\, 1937 \nWith the name of Chez Panisse inspired by a character from Marcel Pagnol’s César (1938) it’s only fitting that we begin this series with Pagnol’s enchanting paean to agrarian France. After years of migration to the big cities\, a remote village nestled on a hilltop is down to its last few inhabitants\, including Pantrule (Gabriel Gabrio)\, a hulking but gentle hermit who longs to revive the town. When he encounters Arsule (Orane Demazis)\, a woman on the run looking to start over herself\, the pair begin tilling the earth to grow wheat and hopefully revive a whole way of life. Pagnol suffuses every shot of their labor and the land with tenderness and care in a film about the beauty and dignity of the simple things. \nDCP\, b&w\, in French with English subtitles\, 127 min. Director: Marcel Pagnol. Screenwriter: Jean Giono\, Marcel Pagnol. With: Fernandel\, Orane Demazis\, Gabriel Gabrio. \nPart of:\nFood and Film: Farming \nDinner and a movie. It’s a combination\, a social custom\, perhaps\, almost as old as the movies themselves. But where the public fascination with how movies get made still drives an entire media industry\, we’ve been less willing\, by comparison\, to learn as much about how a meal comes together\, how the food on our plate gets there. Few people have been more instrumental in changing that than Alice Waters. The co-founder with film producer Paul Aratow of the award-winning Chez Panisse in 1971\, the legendary Bay Area chef and restaurateur has been a central\, passionate advocate of the farm-to-table movement which promotes seasonal\, organic and locally sourced ingredients for restaurants\, schools and in the home. Waters’ philosophy is predicated on eating being a political act; where and whom you get your food from and the conviction that sustainable farming practices are essential to building sustainable\, thriving communities. The UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Hammer Museum are thrilled to partner with Waters for an ongoing series that explores how movies from around the world have represented food and food production. Each program will pair a selection of movies with a special dinner at Lulu restaurant at the Hammer Museum\, Waters’ latest culinary celebration. For the inaugural weekend\, they’ve curated a program of films centered on community\, farms and the people they help sustain.

SUMMARY:Food and Film: Farming - Our Daily Bread / Under the Fig Trees
DESCRIPTION:Admission is free. No advance reservations. Your seat will be assigned to you when you pick up your ticket at the box office. Seats are assigned on a first come\, first served basis. The box office opens one hour before the event. \nOur Daily Bread\nU.S.\, 1934 \nStruggling in the thick of the Depression\, a young couple\, John and Mary Sims (Karen Morley and Tom Keene)\, receive an unexpected offer to take over a farm. Working the land quickly proves overwhelming for the urbanites until they invite other displaced people to join a collective community to turn the farm around. Director King Vidor brings ample verve to this American pastoral as ordinary folk swelling with can-do spirit flock to the Sims’ experiment in share-and-share alike living. Just a touch of proto-noir shadow falls across the fields when Barbara Peppers’ platinum blonde attracts the husband’s eye but when a drought threatens\, the community calls\, and Vidor orchestrates a thrilling finale around\, of all things\, a communal irrigation project. \nDCP\, b&w\, 80 min. Director: King Vidor. Screenwriter: King Vidor\, Elizabeth Hill\, Joseph L. Mankiewicz. With: Karen Morley\, Tom Keene\, Barbara Pepper. \nUnder the Fig Trees\nTunisia/Switzerland/France/Qatar/Germany\, 2021 \nBeginning at sunrise\, with the soft light cutting through the darkness\, a crew of workers — women and men\, old and young — begin their day working in a fig orchard. Closely following a group of teenage girls\, filmmaker Erige Sehiri tenderly brings the everyday acts of labor and intergenerational workers into focus\, as they flirt\, converse and work among the trees for the day. This first feature is a stunning debut\, one of tender moments\, flowing with conversation and farming\, that celebrates the mundane and the small moments that happen between people while they work. \nDCP\, color\, 92 min. In Arabic with English subtitles. Director: Erige Sehiri. Screenwriter: Peggy Hamann\, Ghalya Lacroix\, Erige Sehiri. With: Fide Fdhili\, Feten Fdhili\, Ameni Fdhili. \nPart of:\nFood and Film: Farming \nDinner and a movie. It’s a combination\, a social custom\, perhaps\, almost as old as the movies themselves.
