SUMMARY:Post Disaster Resilience and Recovery: Learning from disasters and creating safer cities
DESCRIPTION:Cities are facing more and more severe weather events in recent years\, having a catastrophic impact on communities and their ability to recover. There is an urgent need for cities to better prepare themselves to withstand the adverse impact of these disasters which can enable an effective recovery and minimize losses. \nIn the Bordeaux region in France\, one-fourth of its habitable area is below the river’s high-water line\, exposing the Bordeaux Metropolitan Area to a dual risk of flooding from the sea and the river. As in many cities worldwide\, in Bordeaux floods have been increasing in frequency and intensity since the 1980s. Meanwhile\, cities in the USA have vast experience addressing and recovering from large-scale disasters\, having faced and dealt with the consequences of extreme events like hurricanes and wildfires frequently. \nPlanning for effective post-disaster recovery can help cities set the path for a safer\, resilient and sustainable future. It is crucial that we bring together cities to share their experience and lessons learned in their post disaster recovery efforts\, and how those can shape cities to plan and build back better. \nThe fifth session of the Cities on the Frontline Speaker Series 2023\, with the support of the Embassy of the United States of America\, France\, and in collaboration with partners France Ville Durable and the World Bank\, will focus on “Post Disaster Resilience and Recovery”. \nBy bringing together New Orleans and the Bordeaux Metropolitan Region\, we’re taking a deeper look at how cities can learn from each other and ensure that everyone\, especially vulnerable and marginalized groups\, have the ability to recover from severe disasters as well as how cities rebuild and strengthen their systems\, policies and infrastructure. \nAustin Feldbaum\, Hazard Mitigation Director from the City of New Orleans\, will join us to share their learnings on recovery and how they reconceived their city’s strategies after disasters. Valérie Sabéran\, Climate Risk and Resilience Director from the Bordeaux Metropolitan Area\, will share more about how the metropolis is committed more than ever to strengthening their flood management strategy as well as efforts to address climate change and learning from their past experiences with severe flooding. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:ROADMAP 2035: Cars\, Carbon and Climate Change – How Do We Meet California’s Zero Emissions Goals?
DESCRIPTION:Join Capitol Weekly for a conference examining California’s climate goals – specifically the plan to move beyond gas-powered vehicles. ROADMAP 2035: Cars\, Carbon and Climate Change – How Do We Meet California’s Zero Emissions Goals? will be held on Thursday\, May 25\, 2023\, in Sacramento. A remote-viewing Zoom option is available HERE. \nSPACE IS LIMITED – CLICK HERE TO REGISTER FOR THE LIVE EVENT \nBy 2035 all new passenger cars\, trucks and SUVs sold in California must be zero emissions. California’s Advanced Clean Cars II regulations will rapidly scale down light-duty passenger car\, pickup truck and SUV emissions starting with the 2026 model year. \nAnd\, it’s not just happening in California. In March\, the European Union announced a law to end sales of new CO2-emitting cars in 2035. Multiple states\, including Oregon have similar mandates in place\, and the Environmental Protection Agency has proposed new rules that could require up to two-thirds of all new cars sold in the US by 2032 to be zero emission vehicles. \nDespite these ambitious goals\, major challenges remain. Public acceptance of EVs is growing\, but not at the rate needed to meet the mandate. And\, the state’s electrical grid is barely able to meet peak demand now; what happens when the average Californian is driving a plug-in? We’ll look at these questions and many more. \nClick here to view an event program\, with profiles of speakers and other details. \nThe Keynote Speaker is Alice Busching Reynolds\, President of the California Public Utilities Commission\, in conversation with Rich Ehisen\, Capitol Weekly. \n9:30 AM\, PANEL 1 – The Technology: How We Get There \nJacquelyn Birdsall\, Toyota; Steve Douglas\, Alliance for Automotive Innovation; Quentin Gee\, California Energy Commission; Orville Thomas\, CALSTART \nModerated by Alejandro Lazo\, CalMatters \n10:45 AM\, PANEL 2 – What Now: Timelines and Implementation \nDr. Jen Gress\, California Air Resources Board; Kip Lipper\, Policy Advisor to the Sen. Pro Tem; Michael Pimentel\, California Transit Association; Scott Wetch\, Carter\, Wetch and Associates \nModerated by Ari Plachta\, Sacramento Bee \nNoon\, KEYNOTE – Alice Busching Reynolds\, President\, California Public Utilities Commission \nIn conversation with Rich Ehisen\, Capitol Weekly \n1:00 PM\, PANEL 3 – The Future vs. The Past: The Impact on California’s Legacy Industries \nChristopher Benjamin\, Pacific Gas & Electric; Jon Costantino\, Tradesman Advisors; Catherine Reheis-Boyd\, Western States Petroleum Association; Laura Renger\, California Electric Transportation Coalition \nModerated by Brian Joseph\, Capitol Weekly

SUMMARY:Art Reception - Nature Always Wins: A Photography Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Nature is active in conquering us not only through the occasional earthquake or flood\, but in the subtleties of vegetation that turn every settlement into an ongoing archaeological site. What do we see when we look down? Grass growing in the cracks of freeway pavements\, and plants taking root in the little crevices of buildings and alleys. \nMonica L. Smith\, an archaeologist and member of the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at UCLA\, takes us on a photographic journey to the world of vibrant and resilient vegetation underfoot. She shows us how an artist’s eye resides within all of us\, enabling us to see what we usually filter out of our perception as we traverse the streets of Los Angeles. \nThe exhibit coincides with the release of her edited volume\, The Power of Nature\, published by the University Press of Colorado and featuring a number of UCLA authors.

SUMMARY:UCLA AUD Spring 2023 Events: Dana Cuff presents "Architectures of Spatial Justice"
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate AUD Professor Dana Cuff and her latest book\, Architectures of Spatial Justice — a field-defining work that demonstrates how architects are breaking with professional conventions to advance spatial justice and design more equitable buildings and cities. \nAs state violence\, the pandemic\, and environmental collapse have exposed systemic inequities\, architects and urbanists have been pushed to confront how their actions contribute to racism and climate crisis—and how they can effect change. Establishing an ethics of spatial justice to lead architecture forward\, Dana Cuff shows why the discipline requires critical examination—in relation to not only buildings and the capital required to realize them but privilege\, power\, aesthetics\, and sociality. That is\, it requires a reevaluation of architecture’s fundamental tenets. \nOrganized around projects and topics\, Architectures of Spatial Justice is a compelling blend of theory\, history\, and applied practice that focuses on two foundational conditions of architecture: its relation to the public and its dependence on capital. The book draws on studies of architectural projects from around the world\, with instructive case studies from Chile\, Mexico\, Japan\, and the United States that focus in particular on urban centers\, where architecture is most directly engaged with social justice issues. \nEmerging from more than two decades of the author’s own project-based research\, Architectures of Spatial Justice examines ethically driven practices that break with professional conventions to correct long-standing inequities in the built environment\, uncovering architecture’s limits—and its potential. \nLearn more about the book via AUD News.

SUMMARY:The Fire Circle: Volunteer Day in the Survivor’s Healing Garden at the Reverence Project
DESCRIPTION:After our spring weeding\, seeding and rain\, the Survivor’s Healing Garden at the Reverence Project is in full superbloom! We hope you’ll join us among the poppies (and California lilac\, and globemallow\, and verbena…). \nOur next four volunteer days will focus on building seating for our fire circle. This sacred space will host healing and community circles\, harnessing the power of fire to amplify connection and joy. The love you bring to the work you do here will serve as a foundation for healing. \nThis is a free\, hands-on opportunity to learn how to build SuperAdobe structures\, a low-tech\, low-cost\, long-lasting\, sustainable and increasingly popular architectural strategy. It’s fun! It’s easy! It’s dirty! The time it takes will depend a bit on the number of hands contributing\, temperatures and precipitation. Here is what we expect: \nSaturday\, June 03: We may add more cobb mid-layer as needed. If the structure is ready\, we’ll mix a lime/cement finish plaster\, and trowel it on over the cob. \nSunday\, June 04: We’ll mix a lime/cement finish plaster\, and trowel it on over the cob. We’ll set some decorative tiles on the sides at this time. \nIf work in the blooms is what calls you\, we’ll also continue weeding and seeding. We’ll provide light refreshments\, some work gloves and tools\, and great joy for your contributions to our space and work. \nWhat to Bring \nWe need nothing beyond your hands and your hearts. If you are so inspired\, we invite offerings of peace and light that can be integrated into the fire circle seating to honor the Watts community and support survivors’ healing. In keeping with the aesthetic and inspiration of our iconic Watts Towers\, we would be particularly happy to give a permanent home to rocks\, seashells\, crystals\, ceramic\, or metal that is beyond its first use. \nWhat to Wear \nPlease consider wearing a sun hat\, sunscreen\, and work gloves along with shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Water bottles are recommended! Your weeding and planting tools are also welcome. \nREGISTER HERE
