SUMMARY:Public Gathering: Fire Kinship - Southern California Native Ecology and Art
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to a public community gathering in honor of the exhibition Fire Kinship: Southern California Native Ecology and Art. Fire Kinship challenges the attitudes of fear and illegality around fire\, arguing for a return to Native practices\, in which fire is regarded as a vital aspect of land stewardship\, community well-being\, and tribal sovereignty. Highlighting the knowledge and expertise of the Tongva\, Cahuilla\, Luiseño\, and Kumeyaay peoples\, the exhibition—on view through July 13\, 2025—presents a living history of communities past and present. \nThe Fowler Museum mourns the tragic loss of life and devastation caused by Southern California wildfires. We are deeply grateful to firefighters\, first responders\, and tribal nations for their heroic efforts. In this critical moment\, Fire Kinship offers valuable lessons in Indigenous fire stewardship and ecological resilience. We hope it will inspire reflection\, healing\, and sustainable rebuilding. \nThe evening will begin with a welcome from a local California Indian community\, followed by a reception\, and opportunity to view the exhibition and reflect on the role of fire stewardship in our communities. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Horticultural Society meeting\, featuring UCLA Mathias Botanical Garden Waterworks Project
DESCRIPTION:The Southern California Horticultural Society will host a live program\, to be presented by Allison Keeney\, the assistant director of the UCLA Mathias Botanical Garden\, who has been overseeing various aspects of the garden’s renovation. The focus of her talk will be on a large-scale waterworks project that includes a comprehensive irrigation and stream system\, along with the strategic establishment of riparian plantings. \nKeeney is a third-generation Angeleno who grew up spending most of her time outdoors\, fascinated by plants. This led to her working at a plant nursery during high school\, where she realized that horticulture would become her career path. Keeney earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture from California Polytechnic State University\, San Luis Obispo\, and she has remained in the plant world ever since. For the past three years\, she has been serving as the assistant director of the UCLA Mathias Botanical Garden. \nIn her current position\, Keeney oversaw the installation of the Tongva basket weaving garden\, the design and planting of high visibility areas\, and the creation of Clarkia Hill\, which features the Mathias garden’s signature flower\, as seen on its new branding logo. Most recently\, she initiated the ambitious waterworks project undergoing construction. Plans include a water-saving irrigation system\, an efficient stream\, and adjacent garden areas that will feature California native riparian and a wetland plants. Altogether\, Keeney’s various projects are aimed at improving the garden while she concurrently maintains and curates its diverse plant collection\, primarily designed for teaching and research missions at UCLA. \nPlease join us to learn more about this local treasure on the UCLA campus in Westwood that is free and open to the public. \nMore info at https://socalhort.org/. \nAnnouncements: 7:10 p.m. / Plant Forum: 7:15 p.m. / Program: 7:30 p.m. \nFREE for Members / $5.00 for Non-Members \nProgram will be recorded for the SCHS YouTube archive.

SUMMARY:Talk: “Gender and Los Angeles Residential Water: Use\, Knowledge\, and Justice in Water Conservation”
DESCRIPTION:Presenters: Jessica Cattelino and Kelsey Kim\, UCLA Center for the Study of Women | Barbra Streisand Center \nREGISTER HERE \nAbstract: This study brings feminist anthropological attention to the important but understudied role of gender—as it intersects with migration\, class\, and race—in residential water use in the United States. We reveal gender justice concerns about water use\, management\, and conservation. In the context of international development\, research has shown that gender shapes water\, especially because women and children are disproportionately responsible for procuring water. A large and separate body of research shows that\, in the United States\, household divisions of labor and decision-making are often gendered. This study\, which is based on interviews\, ethnographic observation\, and water diary data from diverse households in four Los Angeles neighborhoods\, found\, first\, that women disproportionately are responsible for the household management and use of water. Tellingly\, we also find that most research participants deny that gender influences water use. Second\, we found that gendered water use is shaped by and co-produced with structures of immigration\, race\, and class: immigrant households possess untapped knowledge about water and its conservation\, and race and class shape people’s relations to water. Third\, we found that household water troubles the water management categories of “residential” versus “commercial” water use\, which correspond to the gendered categories of private versus public\, thereby highlighting the “porosity” of household water use. This research shows why and how inequalities may be exacerbated by gender-evasive water management in the Global North.    \nFor more detailed information\, contact gpierce@luskin.ucla.edu or uclawatergrads@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Walk-through: Taming the Desert
DESCRIPTION:Solsiré Cusicanqui will discuss the fantastic creatures\, powerful ancestors\, and mythological beings found in this exhibition\, which illustrates how ancient Andean societies looked for spiritual meaning and numinous help in an unpredictable and challenging world. \nTaming the Desert: Resilience\, Religion\, and Ancestors in Ancient Peru (November 10\, 2024–April 13\, 2025) showcases 34 Moche and Nasca ceramics and textiles from LACMA and the Fowler Museum at UCLA\, and explores how ancient Andean societies used religion and ritual to navigate the challenges of the Peruvian desert coast. Despite scarce resources and climatic extremes\, the region fostered urbanism\, trade\, and advanced crafts. The exhibit highlights these artistic expressions while drawing parallels to modern issues of climate change and resilience. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Stanford Energy Seminar: Karen Scrivener | Realistic Strategies for Decarbonizing Construction
DESCRIPTION:The Stanford Energy Seminar has been a mainstay of energy engagement at Stanford for nearly 20 years and is one of the flagship programs of the Precourt Institute for Energy. \nTalk abstract: “Construction” contributes around 20% of human related GHGs every year. This is from the embodied emissions of materials\, the transportation and construction processes. These embodied emissions occur mainly “upfront” before the building or infrastructure is even in use and is then effectively “locked in”. This means it has become the most important part of emission from buildings and infrastructure in the coming decades\, especially in light of the climate emergency we are facing. Furthermore\, most new construction (about 80%) in the next 25 years will occur in the global south. In the light of this background\, I will talk about strategies which have a realistic prospect to reduce emission fast and at scale. Large scale reduction can be made\, even with existing technologies\, especially if these are deployed in combination. LC3\, limestone calcined clay cement stands out for the scale and comparative ease with which it can be implemented\, but even here we have an uphill struggle due to lack of incentives. Nevertheless I feel now the tide is turning and we need to think how we can accelerate this process in the future. \nSpeaker Bio: Karen Scrivener is Professor of construction materials at EPFL Switzerland. A Materials Scientist by training\, she has more than 40 year’s experience of research in the field of cement and concrete. She has more than 250 journal publication and was made a fellow of the UK Royal Society of Engineering in 2014. She is also a member of the UN Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition (CEET) and the “10 Member Group” overseeing the UN STI mechanisms. She is the inventor of LC3 (limestone calcined clay cement) which has the potential to save around 40% of CO2 compared to conventional cement. \nAnyone with an interest in energy is welcome to join one seminar or all of them! You can enjoy seminars in the following ways: \n\nAttend live. The auditorium may change quarter by quarter\, so check each seminar event to confirm the location.
