DESCRIPTION:A majority of the population around the world\, including nearly 80% of the U.S. population\, reside in urban areas. As average temperatures rise and extreme heat events become more common due to climate change\, the built environment and lack of vegetation in cities combine to make that heat even more intense for city residents. DESCRIPTION:The use of air cleaners with electronic technologies continues to grow in response to public health concerns such as wildfires\, the COVID-19 pandemic\, and increased asthma prevalence. \nResearchers have found that electronic air cleaners can also emit substances such as ozone\, formaldehyde\, and other air pollutants that adversely affect public health. It is crucial that we understand the potential risks associated with these devices. \nThis seminar will focus on the potential health impacts of exposure to emissions\, particularly among vulnerable sub-groups\, such as infants\, children\, and individuals with chronic lung or heart disease\, and others. DESCRIPTION:Re:wild Your Campus’s Green Grounds Certification offers a new pathway for schools to reduce synthetic pesticide usage and implement organic grounds maintenance practices. This webinar will guide participants through the certification process and will address common questions around certification. The webinar will also feature several leaders in the space\, including Shannon Britton of Seattle University who will talk about her years of experience managing Seattle University\, which is being certified at the Platinum level of the Green Grounds Certification. Additionally\, Eric O’brien from University of Northern Iowa will give insight into what efforts to improve landscape practices look like at a school that is just starting its journey towards more ecologically sounds landcare practices. UNI is applying to be certified at the Bronze level\, and Eric will talk about what practices they are implementing to achieve this level\, and how the certification helped to bridge gaps on campus between anti-pesticide advocates and grounds crews. Sean Breckin will provide an overview of what it looks like to partner with a third party to implement organic land care on campus grounds. DESCRIPTION:In the face of the largest human-caused ecological crisis\, it is difficult to maintain emotional equilibrium. In this 90-minute workshop\, join other like-minded people who are working on climate change to gain tools and resources to increase ecologically focused emotional resilience. In this workshop\, you will gain knowledge and actively engage in best practices designed to help work for a better and more sustainable present and future world. \nThis workshop will be facilitated by Nikyta Palmisani\, a Learning for Action Instructor for Terra.do\, and an Ecopsychologist and Mindfulness instructor who lives and practices on Lopez Island in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Nikyta has been working internationally on climate change in NGOs\, in private practice with groups and individual clients\, as well as on United Nations delegations. DESCRIPTION:CITRIS Research Exchange with \nEli Yablonovitch \nProfessor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences\, UC Berkeley \n“Carbon-negative Technology To Solve the Climate Crisis” \nAbout Talk: \nIn 1977\, physicist Freeman Dyson proposed the burial of biomass as a scalable\, economical solution to the carbon dioxide problem. Today we know that harvested vegetation should be buried in an engineered dry biolandfill. Plant biomass can be preserved for thousands of years by burial in a dry environment with sufficiently low thermodynamic “water activity\,” which is the relative humidity in equilibrium with the biomass. A water activity less than 60 percent will not support life\, suppressing anaerobic organisms\, thus preserving the biomass for millennia. Current agriculture and biolandfill costs indicate that $60 per ton of sequestered carbon dioxide corresponds to $0.53 per gallon of gasoline. If scaled to the level of a major crop\, existing carbon dioxide can be extracted from the atmosphere and sequester a significant fraction of prior years’ carbon dioxide emissions. \nREGISTER HERE \nAbout the Speaker: \nEli Yablonovitch introduced the idea that strained semiconductor lasers could have superior performance due to reduced valence band effective mass. Now\, with optical telecommunication\, almost every human interaction on the internet occurs by strained semiconductor lasers. Yablonovitch is regarded as a father of the photonic bandgap concept\, and he coined the term “photonic crystal.” The geometrical structure of the first experimentally realized photonic bandgap is sometimes called “Yablonovite.” In his photovoltaic research\, Yablonovitch introduced the 4 (n squared) light-trapping factor\, known as the “Yablonovitch limit\,” that is in worldwide use for almost all commercial solar panels.
