DESCRIPTION:Visit the UCLA Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden for a unique tour of bird sounds from all over the world! As you wander through sections of the Garden representing Hawaii\, Australia\, South Africa\, SoCal\, and more\, you can listen to the songs and calls of each area’s characteristic birds using our phone-based audio tour. The Garden will also host a presentation about some of UCLA’s groundbreaking bird research\, including the Bird Genoscape Project and the Center for Tropical Research. This program is additionally co-presented by the UCLA Institute of Environment and Sustainability and the Laboratory for Environmental Narrative Strategies. DESCRIPTION:This event is aimed to spread awareness of how environmental policies impact various industries. We plan on taking an alternative approach by inviting speakers from solar industry\, environmental law and government officials. Each of the five speakers will have 10 minutes to introduce themselves. In the latter half of the event\, there will also be a chance for all speakers to answer questions from the host speaker and the audience. The goal of this event is to generate awareness on how environmental policies and regulation affect government and company goals. This event illrustrates the importance of active participation in local and federal environmental law as it can shape future of every industry. We also hope to inspire students to be more conscious of how their individual actions impact campus sustainability and also the greater LA area. \nThis event will be held in the Bruin Viewpoint Room in Ackermon Union.

SUMMARY:SMERC Forum Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems
DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems:\nTechnology Innovations and Business Opportunities\nArtificial Intelligence (AI) is being called the ‘fourth industrial revolution’. It is now poised to transform every industry\, just as electricity did 100 years ago and the Internet did 50 years ago. Between now and 2030\, AI is expected to generate $13 trillion in global economic activity. While AI has already created tremendous value for technology companies such as Google\, Baidu and Facebook\, additional waves of value creation will go beyond the high-tech sector. The rise of AI presents an opportunity for businesses to differentiate themselves and gain strategic advantage over their competition. \nWhile AI is not new\, the increase in the scale and speed of the existing computing infrastructure and the availability of new computing infrastructures such as cloud\, has made it cheaper and faster to tackle problems of significant scale using AI. In addition\, new emerging technologies now allow handling of large distributed datasets for faster processing\, making better AI solutions feasible. These factors\, coupled with the availability of large volumes of data generated from social\, mobile\, smart-homes and automobiles using IoT (Internet of Things)\, are bringing greater reliability to predictions generated by machine learning and bringing AI to the forefront to solve real world problems quickly and efficiently. \nSectors ranging from retail to entertainment and healthcare to finance are making investments in various applications with AI. The transportation sector is perhaps experiencing the largest investments with automobile manufacturers teaming up with high-tech companies to come up with autonomous car solutions such as Alphabet’s Waymo and General Motors’ Cruise. In the transportation sector\, AI has also provided businesses the technology to come up with solutions for ride-sharing\, car rental\, electric cars and micro-mobility\, bringing significant disruption to the sector. \nThis workshop will bring together thought leaders from industry and academia to define and discuss AI\, where AI can be used and\, skills and opportunities being generated for data scientists and analysts interested in business and policy issues especially as they pertain to autonomous systems such as those in transportation. The future of AI including block-chain\, privacy and cybersecurity will also be discussed. Successful business models\, policies that need to be put into place and\, biases and ethics with AI are also topics for discussion at this workshop. \nThis workshop aims to build thought leadership in AI with focus on autonomous systems. Experts from various applications of AI and those in the transportation sector will present and discuss the recent developments\, key problems to solve and what is the future. \nWho Should Attend:\nWhether you approach AI as a data scientist\, data analyst\, researcher\, business executive or entrepreneur\, this conference will provide the opportunity to learn and network with experts in AI and those working on innovations in the automotive and transportation sectors. As rainforests disappear\, however\, many of these plant species face extinction. At the same time\, due to acculturation\, much of this indigenous knowledge is disappearing as well\, often much faster than the plants themselves. And climate change—particularly changing rainfall patterns—is placing added stress on rainforest animals\, plants and peoples. \nFor well over two decades\, the Amazon Conservation Team (ACT) has played a pioneering role in biocultural conservation\, working to protect both rainforest ecosystems and tribal cultures. To date\, ACT has partnered with over 50 South American tribes to not only map tens of millions of acres but also to carry out projects in ethnoeducation\, shamanic knowledge intergenerational transmission\, sustainable livelihoods\, and women’s empowerment. Noted ethnobotanist Mark Plotkin and senior manager of mapping and program support Brian Hettler of the Amazon Conservation Team detail those efforts. Our theme this year is CURRENTS OF FOOD: Changing Our Food System Through Art and Culture.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nEvery year in late October across the country\, thousands of Americans commemorate national Food Day by bringing diverse communities together to enjoy Good Food and push for improved food policies to end hunger\, promote health\, protect food workers and care for our environment. \nThis year\, Food Day in Los Angeles takes place during CURRENT:LA FOOD\, a month-long event produced by the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs that features public art in city parks around the theme of food. \n“Food for us comes from our relatives\, whether they have wings or fins or roots.
