SUMMARY:Green Policy and Industry Panel (Renewable Energy Association Event)
DESCRIPTION:This event is aimed to spread awareness of how environmental policies impact various industries. We plan on taking an alternative approach by inviting speakers from solar industry\, environmental law and government officials. Each of the five speakers will have 10 minutes to introduce themselves. In the latter half of the event\, there will also be a chance for all speakers to answer questions from the host speaker and the audience. The goal of this event is to generate awareness on how environmental policies and regulation affect government and company goals. This event illrustrates the importance of active participation in local and federal environmental law as it can shape future of every industry. We also hope to inspire students to be more conscious of how their individual actions impact campus sustainability and also the greater LA area. \nThis event will be held in the Bruin Viewpoint Room in Ackermon Union.

SUMMARY:SMERC Forum Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems
DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems:\nTechnology Innovations and Business Opportunities\nArtificial Intelligence (AI) is being called the ‘fourth industrial revolution’. It is now poised to transform every industry\, just as electricity did 100 years ago and the Internet did 50 years ago. Between now and 2030\, AI is expected to generate $13 trillion in global economic activity. While AI has already created tremendous value for technology companies such as Google\, Baidu and Facebook\, additional waves of value creation will go beyond the high-tech sector. The rise of AI presents an opportunity for businesses to differentiate themselves and gain strategic advantage over their competition. \nWhile AI is not new\, the increase in the scale and speed of the existing computing infrastructure and the availability of new computing infrastructures such as cloud\, has made it cheaper and faster to tackle problems of significant scale using AI. In addition\, new emerging technologies now allow handling of large distributed datasets for faster processing\, making better AI solutions feasible. These factors\, coupled with the availability of large volumes of data generated from social\, mobile\, smart-homes and automobiles using IoT (Internet of Things)\, are bringing greater reliability to predictions generated by machine learning and bringing AI to the forefront to solve real world problems quickly and efficiently. \nSectors ranging from retail to entertainment and healthcare to finance are making investments in various applications with AI. The transportation sector is perhaps experiencing the largest investments with automobile manufacturers teaming up with high-tech companies to come up with autonomous car solutions such as Alphabet’s Waymo and General Motors’ Cruise. In the transportation sector\, AI has also provided businesses the technology to come up with solutions for ride-sharing\, car rental\, electric cars and micro-mobility\, bringing significant disruption to the sector. \nThis workshop will bring together thought leaders from industry and academia to define and discuss AI\, where AI can be used and\, skills and opportunities being generated for data scientists and analysts interested in business and policy issues especially as they pertain to autonomous systems such as those in transportation. The future of AI including block-chain\, privacy and cybersecurity will also be discussed. Successful business models\, policies that need to be put into place and\, biases and ethics with AI are also topics for discussion at this workshop. \nThis workshop aims to build thought leadership in AI with focus on autonomous systems. Experts from various applications of AI and those in the transportation sector will present and discuss the recent developments\, key problems to solve and what is the future. \nWho Should Attend:\nWhether you approach AI as a data scientist\, data analyst\, researcher\, business executive or entrepreneur\, this conference will provide the opportunity to learn and network with experts in AI and those working on innovations in the automotive and transportation sectors. This workshop is designed to deliver the latest breakthroughs and trends in AI as applied to Autonomous Systems to practitioners\, academics\, businesses\, and startups\, with a technical emphasis. \n \n\n\n\n\nAlex Capecelatro\nCEO\nJosh.ai\n\nAnkur Mehta\nAssistant Professor\nElectrical and Computer Engineering\, UCLA\n\nDavid Fairbank\nMarket Manager\, Bikes & Scooters\, Los Angeles\nLyft\n\nFelix Naveen Singh\nHead of Robotics Autonomy Systems and Software QA Engineering\nBrain Corp\n\n\n\nJennifer Myers\nSenior Director of Deep Learning Frameworks\nIntel AI products group\n\nJJ Espinoza\nformer Director of Data Science\n20th Century Fox\n\nMike Zeller\nSVP AI Strategy & Innovation\nSoftware AG\n\nRajit Gadh\nDirector\nUCLA Smart Grid Energy Research Center\n\n\n\nRebekah Eggers\nWW Leader – IoT for Energy\, Environment\, & Utilities\nIBM\n\nRick Gehringer\nCIO\nThe Milken Institute\n\nVandana (Ana) Mangal\nAI and Mobility Expert & Former Executive Director\nEaston Center\, UCLA Anderson\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAlexander Keros\nManager\, Advanced Vehicle and Infrastructure Policy\nGeneral Motors\n\n\nAndrea Linder\nCustomer Experience Specialist\nPorsche Motorsport\n\n\nAngelina Galiteva\nBoard of Governors\nCalifornia ISO\n\n\nBernard Soriano\nDeputy Director\nCalifornia Department of Motor Vehicles\n\n\nBill Williams\nCommercial Sales Director\nProterra\, Inc\n\n\nCarley Markovitz\nTransportation & Land Use Planning Manager\nAECOM\n\n\nColton Ching\nVice President\, Energy Delivery\nHawaiian Electric Company\n\n\nDakota Semler\nCEO\nThor Trucks\n\n\nDale Thompson\nEngineer\nLADWP\n\n\nDoug Kim\nDirector\, Advanced Technology\nSouthern California Edison\n\n\nEric Mika\nGovernment\, and Corporate Affairs\nEVELOZCITY\n\n\nHenrik Fisker\nChairman\nFisker Inc.\n\n\nJoão Torres\nCEO\nEDP Distribuição\, Portuguese Distribution System Operator\n\n\nKevin Dasso\nSenior Director of Smart Grid & Technology Integration\nPacific Gas & Electric Company\n\n\nLee Krevat\nDirector – Smart Grid\nSan Diego Gas & Electric\n\n\nLeon Kaunitz\nDirector of Body\, Structural Engineering and Advanced Technology\nNextEV/NIO\n\n\nLivio Gallo\nChief Executive Officer\nEnel Distribuzione\n\n\nMani Srivastava\nProfessor\nUCLA Electrical Engineering\n\n\nMario Gerla\nProfessor\nUCLA Computer Science\n\n\nMark McGranaghan\nVice President\nElectric Power Research Institute\n\n\nMarvin Moon\nDirector of Power System Engineering\nLos Angeles Department of Water and Power\n\n\nMatt Mikio Miyasato\nAssistant Deputy Executive Officer\nAir Quality Management District\n\n\nMichael Liu\nDirector\, Energy Storage Business Development\nBYD America\n\n\nMichelle Bogen\nAdvanced Technology Engineer\nBMW Group Technology Office\n\n\nNancy Ryan\nDeputy Executive Director for Policy\nCPUC\n\n\nNancy Sutley\nChief Sustainability and Economic Development Officer\nLADWP\n\n\nPat Hoffman\nAssistant Secretary\nU.S. DOE\n\n\nRajit Gadh\nDirector\nUCLA Smart Grid Energy Research Center\n\n\nRamanath Ramakrishnan\nEVP & Chief Technology Officer\nEaton\n\n\nRobert Weisenmiller\nChair\nCalifornia Energy Commission\n\n\nRyan Harty\nManager of Connected and Environmental Business Development\nAmerican Honda Motor Co.\n\n\nSharmila Ravula\nCCO and VP of Business Development\nBosch Building Grid Technologies\n\n\nStephen B. SUMMARY:The Healing Forest: Plant Medicine\, Isolated Tribes\, & Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Date And Time\n\nTue\, October 22\, 2019 \n4:30 PM – 6:30 PM PDT \nAdd to Calendar \n\nLocation\n\nNeuroscience Research Building \n635 Charles E Young Drive South \nLos Angeles\, CA 90095 \nView Map \n\n\nJoin Mark Plotkin and Brian Hettler of the Amazon Conservation Team for the first lecture of the Plants Worlds Ethnobotany Seminar Series\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\n\nEthnobotanists are scientists who study the relationship between people and plants\, often with a special focus on traditional healers and their botanical medicines. As rainforests disappear\, however\, many of these plant species face extinction. At the same time\, due to acculturation\, much of this indigenous knowledge is disappearing as well\, often much faster than the plants themselves. And climate change—particularly changing rainfall patterns—is placing added stress on rainforest animals\, plants and peoples. \nFor well over two decades\, the Amazon Conservation Team (ACT) has played a pioneering role in biocultural conservation\, working to protect both rainforest ecosystems and tribal cultures. To date\, ACT has partnered with over 50 South American tribes to not only map tens of millions of acres but also to carry out projects in ethnoeducation\, shamanic knowledge intergenerational transmission\, sustainable livelihoods\, and women’s empowerment. Noted ethnobotanist Mark Plotkin and senior manager of mapping and program support Brian Hettler of the Amazon Conservation Team detail those efforts. This event is free but seating is limited–please RSVP. \nThis talk is a part of the Plant Worlds Ethnobotany Seminar Series Co-presented by UCLA Humanities\, UCLA Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden\, and The Huntington. The kingdom of plants exhibit their influence at all levels of human survival\, society\, and culture. This collection of seminars weaves together our scientific understanding of plants with their inextricable roles in our lives–from food and medicine to literature\, religion\, and the arts. Join us to explore botanical humanities throughout time and the world. \nSpecial thanks to UCLA Life Sciences\, Semel Healthy Campus Initiative Center at UCLA\, Traditional Medicinals\, and the Institute for the Preservation of Medical Traditions for their support of this seminar series.

SUMMARY:The Governance of Solar Geoengineering: A Book Talk with Jesse Reynolds\, UCLA Law
DESCRIPTION:At an Emmett Institute book talk on November 12\, 2019\, Jesse Reynolds\, Emmett/Frankel Fellow in Environmental Law and Policy at UCLA School of Law\, will discuss findings from his new book\, The Governance of Solar Geoengineering: Managing Climate Change in the Anthropocene\, as from more recent work. \nLocation: Law 1447 \n\n\n\nDate: 11/12/2019\n\nTime: 12:15 PM – 01:30 PM\nLocation: UCLA School of Law\, Room 1447\n\n\n\nClimate change is among the world’s most important problems\, and the responses of emission cuts and adapting to new climates remain elusive. One set of proposals receiving increasing attention among scientists and policymakers is “solar geoengineering\,” which would reflect a small portion of incoming sunlight to reduce climate change. Evidence indicates that this could be effective\, inexpensive\, and technologically feasible\, but it poses serious environmental risks and social challenges. Governance will thus be crucial. \nAt an Emmett Institute book talk on November 12\, 2019\, Jesse Reynolds\, Emmett/Frankel Fellow in Environmental Law and Policy at UCLA School of Law\, will discuss findings from his new book\, The Governance of Solar Geoengineering: Managing Climate Change in the Anthropocene\, as from more recent work. In the book\, Reynolds draws on law\, political science\, and economics to show how solar geoengineering is\, could\, and should be governed. Ted Parson\, Dan and Rae Emmett Professor of Environmental Law at UCLA School of Law\, will moderate the conversation. Parson leads the Climate Engineering Governance Project at the Emmett institute\, which examines governance challenges posed by climate engineering technologies and potential responses.\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP here by November 5\, 2019\n\nLunch will be provided.  Please fill out the form here to register.\n\nContact Daniel Melling\, melling@law.ucla.edu with any questions.

SUMMARY:Youth x L.A. Green New Deal Panel
DESCRIPTION:How to take climate action during the era of the Green New Deal\, Environmental Activism\, and Social Media \nWe are in the midst of a climate emergency. From extreme heat waves to persistent droughts and relentless wildfires\, our region is facing firsthand the consequences of climate change. In response to the mounting crisis\, the city of Los Angeles released a sweeping sustainability plan–known as the L.A. Green New Deal in April 2019. This city-wide initiative is designed to lead Los Angeles towards a low-carbon\, green-energy future by 2050. \nHowever\, these goals are unattainable without support from the L.A. community– especially from our generation. Join young sustainability leaders for an honest discussion on how we can help support the Green New Deal in transforming Los Angeles into one of the first sustainable megacities in the world. \nBe part of an honest conversation with young sustainability leaders about whether or not we think the Green New Deal is enough; and if it is\, what steps can we take to uphold it. \nWednesday\, January 29th 2020  \n7:00-8:30PM \nUCLA Ackerman  \nBruin View Point Room
