DESCRIPTION:At an Emmett Institute book talk on November 12\, 2019\, Jesse Reynolds\, Emmett/Frankel Fellow in Environmental Law and Policy at UCLA School of Law\, will discuss findings from his new book\, The Governance of Solar Geoengineering: Managing Climate Change in the Anthropocene\, as from more recent work. \nLocation: Law 1447 \n\n\n\nDate: 11/12/2019\n\nTime: 12:15 PM – 01:30 PM\nLocation: UCLA School of Law\, Room 1447\n\n\n\n​Climate change is among the world’s most important problems\, and the responses of emission cuts and adapting to new climates remain elusive. One set of proposals receiving increasing attention among scientists and policymakers is “solar geoengineering\,” which would reflect a small portion of incoming sunlight to reduce climate change. Evidence indicates that this could be effective\, inexpensive\, and technologically feasible\, but it poses serious environmental risks and social challenges. Governance will thus be crucial. \nAt an Emmett Institute book talk on November 12\, 2019\, Jesse Reynolds\, Emmett/Frankel Fellow in Environmental Law and Policy at UCLA School of Law\, will discuss findings from his new book\, The Governance of Solar Geoengineering: Managing Climate Change in the Anthropocene\, as from more recent work. In the book\, Reynolds draws on law\, political science\, and economics to show how solar geoengineering is\, could\, and should be governed. Ted Parson\, Dan and Rae Emmett Professor of Environmental Law at UCLA School of Law\, will moderate the conversation. Parson leads the Climate Engineering Governance Project at the Emmett institute\, which examines governance challenges posed by climate engineering technologies and potential responses.\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. DESCRIPTION:At a UCLA Emmett Institute book talk\, Holly Jean Buck\, Emmett Climate Engineering Fellow in Environmental Law and Policy at UCLA Law\, will share insights from her new book\, After Geoengineering.\n\nDate: 02/18/2020\nTime: 12:15 PM – 01:30 PM\nLocation: UCLA School of Law\, Room 1420\n\n\n\nAt a UCLA Emmett Institute book talk\, Holly Jean Buck\, Emmett Climate Engineering Fellow in Environmental Law and Policy at UCLA Law will share insights from her new book\, After Geoengineering: Climate Tragedy\, Repair\, and Restoration. Ted Parson\, Dan and Rae Emmett Professor of Environmental Law and Faculty Co-Director of the Emmett Institute at UCLA Law will moderate the conversation. \nIn this book\, Buck charts a possible course to a liveable future. Climate restoration will require not just innovative technologies to remove carbon from the atmosphere\, but social and economic transformation. The steps we must take are enormous\, and they must be taken soon. Looking at industrial-scale seaweed farms\, the grinding of rocks to sequester carbon at the bottom of the sea\, the restoration of wetlands\, and reforestation\, Buck examines possible methods for such transformations and meets the people developing them. \nThe event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP here by February 14\, 2020. \nHolly Jean Buck is an Emmett Climate Engineering Fellow in Environmental Law and Policy at UCLA School of Law for 2019-2020. Her research focuses on environmental sociology\, science and technology studies\, and international agriculture and rural development. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a discussion with Erin Leonard on how to green the toy industry \nWhen: Thursday February 27 from 2:30-3:30 pm Anderson School Cornell Hall\, Room D-313 \nErin Leonard is Global Sustainability Manager in Supply Chain Governance\, Reporting\, and Compliance at Mattel. She leads the company’s sustainability programs and is responsible for developing and implementing business and environmental goals and objectives. Erin oversees all aspects of sustainability for Mattel with a particular focus on operations and supply chain\, to mitigate impacts from Mattel’s operations\, products\, and packaging. In December 2019\, Mattel announced a goal to achieve 100% recycled\, recyclable or bio-based plastics materials in both its products and packaging by 2030\, one of the most aggressive corporate goals focused on both products and packaging in the industry. \n \nWith over 12 years of experience in the environmental field Erin is an expert in corporate sustainability policy and strategic development. Prior to working for Mattel\, Erin spent 10 years at the Walt Disney Company in the Corporate Citizenship Environment and Conservation\, Integrated Supply Chain Management\, and Disney Consumer Products Corporate Citizenship departments. \nErin holds a B.A. in Environmental and Legal Studies from Brandeis University\, and a Master’s of Environmental Science and Management from the Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at the University of California\, Santa Barbara.

DESCRIPTION:Explore the Flower World with Dr. David Shorter in the third lecture of our Plant Worlds Ethnobotany Seminar Series \nThe Flower World was referenced in the pottery\, codices\, murals\, songs\, myths\, and ceremonies across Mesoamerica. Contemporary Indigenous communities continue to speak of\, about\, and from this powerful realm of healing and sacrifice. Are we simply seeing a Utopianism that spread across the Americas and across thousands of years? Or\, as Dr. Shorter suggests\, might the Flower World be a living\, present indication of a multiverse\, best understood ontologically and inter-dimensionally? \nDr. David Shorter is a Professor of World Arts and Cultures/Dance at UCLA . SUMMARY:Human Rights and the Climate Crisis (Promise Institute Annual Symposium)
DESCRIPTION:New lawsuits and recent rulings are connecting human rights law to the climate crisis in increasingly urgent ways. Last week’s Urgenda ruling in the Netherlands\, the complaint filed by Greta Thunberg and 15 other children under the Convention on the Rights of the Child\, and the Juliana lawsuit against the U.S. government are a few of the many cases that have captured the attention of the public\, advocates\, and legal scholars this year. \nOn February 28\, 2020\, UCLA’s Promise Institute for Human Rights\, Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment\, and Journal of International Law and Foreign Affairs will host a day-long symposium at UCLA School of Law on Human Rights and the Climate Crisis.  \nJoin us to examine the potential of these and other novel legal arguments\, such as framing environmental destruction as an international crime\, to both halt and seek remedy for environmental harms. Our symposium will have a particular focus on climate change.

EPA the decision was hailed as a landmark\, leading EPA to regulate carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions as pollutants and making possible important environmental safeguards which the Trump administration now seeks to unravel. The case has been recognized as the most important environmental law decision made by the Supreme Court. \nAt a UCLA Emmett Institute book talk\, Richard Lazarus\, Howard and Katherine Aibel Professor of Law at Harvard Law School will share insights from his new book\, The Rule of Five: Making Climate History at the Supreme Court\, which reveals the personal dynamics of the justices and dramatizes the workings of the Court during the Massachusetts v. EPA arguments. For ten years he has been co-teaching\, with Chief Justice John Roberts\, a course on the history of the Supreme Court. Lazarus was the founding Director of the Supreme Court Institute\, which prepares attorneys for oral argument in over 90 percent of the cases brought before the Supreme Court.
