SUMMARY:Beware the Elements! Natural Disasters on Film: "Deep Impact" in 35mm
DESCRIPTION:One night\, an amateur stargazer notices a mysterious object in the sky. A year later\, the public learns a seven-mile-wide comet is hurtling toward Earth\, on course to cause an “extinction level event.” To this day\, astronomers assert the creative interventions chosen by the film’s characters\, coupled with depictions of realistic megatsunamis\, result in Deep Impact passing impressive scientific muster. Fondly remembered for Morgan Freeman’s turn as President Beck\, this cosmic summer blockbuster’s commentary on humanity’s struggles to maintain in the face of unexpected upheaval still rings true over twenty-five years later. \nPost-screening conversation with Stephanie Pincetl\, Professor\, Director\, California Center for Sustainable Communities Institute of the Environment and Sustainability\, UCLA. Moderated by Sammy Roth\, Climate Columnist\, Los Angeles Times. \nREGISTER HERE \nIn considering natural disaster films and the scientists who intervene within them\, we can use cinema to envision a world in which humans can harness the elements\, tame nature\, and save the day. Yet\, as real-world climate science has proven time and again\, most of these imaginative interventions are too little\, too late and only collective science-based action by government\, industry\, and civil society can ensure our survival. \nSERIES\nBeware the Elements! Natural Disasters on Film \nThis screening series considers natural disasters through our planet’s primary elements—earth\, wind\, water\, and fire—and seeks to highlight key moments in the history of the disaster film genre as a source of entertainment and portrayal of science\, and as a tool to raise our collective consciousness about science-based solutions to the mounting global climate crisis. Discussions with noted scientists will follow select screenings.

SUMMARY:Advancing the Circular Economy in Healthcare
DESCRIPTION:Hard-to-recycle\, single-use supplies\, packaging and devices have become a defining feature of the healthcare system in recent decades. Economic and safety concerns and a “culture of convenience” has long stymied efforts to reduce the flood of items like disposable gowns\, never-used surgical instruments and endless volumes of blue wrap. This is starting to change. \nPresented in conjunction with Kimball Sustainable Healthcare\, this free webinar\, the first webinar for 2024 in the Green Thinking Webinar Series\, will review key elements of an effective implementation strategy and feature case study presentations of several successful programs. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Climate Justice and Climate Litigation in the US and the EU: Comparative Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:Courts in the US and EU are being asked to adjudicate cases related to climate change. Some of the challenges to address a cross-border issue like global warming are the same on both sides of the pond. But differences between judicial systems mean that US and European courts also face their own unique challenges. Hear a lively discussion of the comparative legal systems as it relates to climate law between Alberto De Franceschi\, professor of law at the University of Ferrara in Italy\, and UCLA Law professors William Boyd and Cara Horowitz. \nLunch will be provided to those who RSVP and attend in person. \nPlease contact Heather Morphew\, morphew@law.ucla.edu\, with any questions. \nREGISTER HERE
