SUMMARY:The Flower World
DESCRIPTION:Explore the Flower World with Dr. David Shorter in the third lecture of our Plant Worlds Ethnobotany Seminar Series \nThe Flower World was referenced in the pottery\, codices\, murals\, songs\, myths\, and ceremonies across Mesoamerica. Contemporary Indigenous communities continue to speak of\, about\, and from this powerful realm of healing and sacrifice. Are we simply seeing a Utopianism that spread across the Americas and across thousands of years? Or\, as Dr. Shorter suggests\, might the Flower World be a living\, present indication of a multiverse\, best understood ontologically and inter-dimensionally? \nDr. David Shorter is a Professor of World Arts and Cultures/Dance at UCLA . He is also the Director of the Archive of Healing\, an online database of healing approaches from around the globe. His talk will feature a forthcoming essay that he co-wrote with Yoeme elder\, Felipe Molina\, a long-time collaborator. To learn more about The Archive of Healing\, and to be one of the first people accessing the archive\, consider signing-up for the listening session on March 5th here at the Garden. Check out this link for more information: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/introducing-the-archive-of-healing-tickets-86735437027?ref=estw \nThis talk is a part of the Plant Worlds Ethnobotany Seminar Series Co-presented by UCLA Humanities \, UCLA Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden \, and The Huntington . The kingdom of plants exhibit their influence at all levels of human survival\, society\, and culture. This collection of seminars weaves together our scientific understanding of plants with their inextricable roles in our lives–from food and medicine to literature\, religion\, and the arts. Join us to explore botanical humanities throughout time and the world. \nSpecial thanks to UCLA Life Sciences \, Semel Healthy Campus Initiative Center at UCLA \, Traditional Medicinals \, and the Institute for the Preservation of Medical Traditions for their support of this seminar series. \nThis event is free\, but seating is limited–Please RSVP. Please note that RSVP does not guarantee entry\, which will be granted on a first come\, first served basis. You do not need to print your confirmation\, but you should plan to arrive early as capacity is limited. We look forward to seeing you.

SUMMARY:Human Rights and the Climate Crisis (Promise Institute Annual Symposium)
DESCRIPTION:New lawsuits and recent rulings are connecting human rights law to the climate crisis in increasingly urgent ways. Last week’s Urgenda ruling in the Netherlands\, the complaint filed by Greta Thunberg and 15 other children under the Convention on the Rights of the Child\, and the Juliana lawsuit against the U.S. government are a few of the many cases that have captured the attention of the public\, advocates\, and legal scholars this year. \nOn February 28\, 2020\, UCLA’s Promise Institute for Human Rights\, Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment\, and Journal of International Law and Foreign Affairs will host a day-long symposium at UCLA School of Law on Human Rights and the Climate Crisis. \nJoin us to examine the potential of these and other novel legal arguments\, such as framing environmental destruction as an international crime\, to both halt and seek remedy for environmental harms. Our symposium will have a particular focus on climate change.

SUMMARY:Climate Change and the Economy in the Context of COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Apr 16\, 2020 1:00 PM to 3:15 PM \n \nJoin the Capital Region Climate Readiness Collaborative (CRC) for our first ever virtual workshop (“virtualshop”) on April 16th from 1:00-3:15PM. We will discuss how COVID-19 is impacting our world\, particularly the potential interplay between the economic impacts of COVID-19 and the need for public and private sector climate action\, resilience building\, and adaptation funding. We will also discuss the state’s priorities for climate moving forward and hear from community leaders about how they continued to fight for climate and reach underserved communities during a pandemic. \nNow\, more than ever\, it is essential for partners across our communities to plan\, coordinate\, and work together on a regional scale. For this reason\, and to inspire cross-topic discussions\, we encourage participants to invite colleagues from other departments or organizations to register and join CRC in this important virtual discussion. \nCOVID-19 is showing what really matters is the same for all of us: the health and safety of our family\, our friends\, our loved ones\, and our communities. These same priorities are at the heart of our shared goal to build a regional foundation to ensure our region is healthy\, sustainable\, and resilient in the face of a changing climate. \nRegister today to continue our work to meet our shared challenges! \nWHO SHOULD ATTEND? \nThis virtualshop is open to the public. We strongly encourage public agency staff (cities\, counties\, regional agencies\, special districts\, etc.)\, elected officials\, non-profit and labor organizations\, community-based organizations\, private consulting firms\, advocacy groups\, students\, and individuals interested in learning about climate action in the Capital Region to attend this engaging and informative event. \nQUESTIONS? \nShould you have any questions\, please contact Grace Kaufman at Grace.Kaufman@valleyvision.org
