SUMMARY:EARTH MONTH: Luskin Innovators Speaker Series - James Salzman
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nRegistration Required. \nYou are invited to join the UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation and The Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment in welcoming James Salzman\, as he discusses his new book\, Drinking Water: A History\, over lunch and refreshments. \nPanel:\nJames Salzman\, Donald Bren Distinguished Professor of Environmental Law\, UCLA Law\nJ.R. DeShazo\, Director and Professor\, UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation\, UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs\nStephanie Pincetl\, Director and Professor-in-Residence\, California Center for Sustainable Communities at UCLA\nNoah Garrison\, Environmental Science Practicum Director\, UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability\nChris Solek\, Programs Director and Senior Scientist\, Council for Watershed Health \n\n\n\nABOUT THE BOOK\nWhen you turn on the tap or twist the cap\, you might not give a second thought to where your drinking water comes from. But how it gets from the ground to your glass is far more complex than you might think. Is it safe to drink tap water? Should you feel guilty buying bottled water? Is your water vulnerable to terrorist attacks? Considering the water contamination disaster in Flint and with springs running dry and reservoirs emptying\, where is your water going to come from in the future? \nIn Drinking Water: A History\, professor James Salzman provides answers to these questions. Bloody conflicts over control of water sources stretch as far back as the Bible yet are featured in front page headlines even today. Only fifty years ago\, selling bottled water sounded as ludicrous as selling bottled air. Salzman weaves all of these issues together to show just how complex a simple glass of water can be. Read more here. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nJim Salzman is the Donald Bren Distinguished Professor of Environmental Law with joint appointments at the environment school at UCSB and the law school at UCLA. In more than eight books and eighty articles\, his broad-ranging scholarship has addressed topics spanning drinking water\, trade and environment conflicts\, policy instrument design\, and the legal and institutional issues in creating markets for ecosystem services. A dedicated classroom teacher\, Salzman was twice selected as Professor of the Year by students at Duke. Read more here. \n

SUMMARY:D r o w n i n g W o r l d - Presentation by Award-Winning Photojournalist Gideon Mendel\, Followed by “The Art of Teaching Climate Change” Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Over the past three years this London-based South African photographer has traveled to flood events in the UK\, India\, Pakistan\, Australia\, Thailand\, Nigeria\, Germany\, The Philippines\, Brazil\, Bangladesh\, and the United States. At each location he outfits himself in waders and submerges himself into the floodwaters to connect with victims and document their stories. The result is a startling collection of still and video portraits of flood survivors taken in deep floodwaters\, within the remains of their homes\, or in submerged landscapes\, in the stillness of once lively environments. Keeping their composure\, the photographed subjects pause in front of Mendel’s camera\, casting an unsettling yet engaging gaze. These images\, taken across the world\, bear witness to a shared experience that erases geographical and cultural divides. They invite viewers to reflect on our impact on nature and\, ultimately\, on our own attachment to our homes and personal belongings. \nGideon Mendel is the inaugural winner of the Pollock-Krasner Prize for Creativity\, awarded in March 2016. Join us on May 12th to meet the artist and learn more about his creative process and arts activism. \nRoundtable Participants:\nGlen MacDonald\nJohn Muir Memorial Chair and Distinguished Professor of Geography\, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\nKatharine Davis Reich\nEnvironmental educator\, UCLA Center for Climate Change Solutions\nRamesh Srinivasan\nAssociate Professor of Information Studies\nAnurima Banerji (Co-moderator)\nAssistant Professor of World Arts and Cultures/Dance\nDavid Gere (Co-moderator)\nProfessor\, World Arts and Cultures/Dance; Director of the UCLA Art & Global Health Center

SUMMARY:Break Free From Fossil Fuels March
DESCRIPTION:Our Health\, Our Climate\, Our Communities\nOn May 14\, 2016 Californians from across the state will convene in Downtown Los Angeles\, the city that is home to the nation’s largest urban oil field in the country. \nWe will march through the heart of L.A. which has become California’s stronghold of the fossil fuel industry and demand that our elected leaders put an end to the oil and gas production that threatens people’s health\, environment\, and future. If California wants to uphold its legacy as a global climate and human rights leader\, then we must keep oil and gas in the ground as we work toward establishing a 100% clean energy future.

SUMMARY:Curbing Carbon Emissions in Dining: A Conversation with ZeroFoodprint (Ticketed Event)
DESCRIPTION:Curbing Carbon Emissions in Dining: A Conversation with ZeroFoodprint\nwith Peter Freed\, Chef Anthony Myint and Chris Ying \nDid you know? \nKernza\, a new grain variety from the Land Institute\, is derived from an ancient form of intermediate wheatgrass that is actually a distant relative of wheat. Kernza is a perennial\, meaning it can be grown year-round\, with roots that live on in the ground through winter. Corn\, wheat\, and most of the other grains we eat\, on the other hand\, are annual crops\, which must be replanted anew every year\, and require seeds\, fertilizers\, and pesticides for each planting. But Kernza’s most important difference–and the reason so many people have been waiting for its arrival–is the way it interacts with the soil. \nAll lecture attendees will enjoy a slice of Kernza bread provided by The Perennial restaurant in San Francisco! \n

SUMMARY:Lecture: Non-Traditional Water Sources: Technology\, Energy\, and the Environment
DESCRIPTION:Semiat Event Flyer \nPlease RSVP. \nCo-sponsored by the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability\, the Water Technology Research Center and the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. \nABOUT THE TALK \nThe challenges in water management are among the most important problems facing the world today. The shortage of clean water is at the heart of critical health issues in developing countries and is the focus of ecological and safety concerns even for highly developed nations. There are increasing efforts to deploy various technologies to reclaim and treat impaired groundwater and surface water\, increase reuse of municipal and industrial wastewater\, and desalinate saline groundwater\, agricultural drainage water\, as well as seawater. There are also major efforts to improve small-scale water purification systems for residential use. A major challenge is to ensure new systems operate in an environmentally-compatible manner. \nIsrael has made significant steps to address these challenges and provide affordable solutions to increase its water portfolio. These include seawater desalination (80% of the urban water consumption)\, tertiary treatment of wastewater for irrigation\, and drip irrigation. Professor Semiat will present some of the major advances in water management and an overview of research efforts at the Technion to improve process effectiveness and reduce cost\, while addressing the important issues pertaining to energy consumption and environmental protection. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \nRaphael Semiat is Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology where he holds the Yitzhak Rabin Memorial Chair in Science\, Engineering and Management of Water Resources. Dr. Semiat also serves as Director of the Rabin Desalination Laboratory\, President of the Israel Desalination Society\, and Co-Editor of the journal Desalination. \nHis research interests include: water technologies with emphasis on water desalination aspects; applications of membranes to separation processes and water desalination; and processes for protecting the environment. \n

Most of that money has been spent. And for the first time ever\, we have good enough data to ask some crucial questions.\n \nWhere was that funding spent? Who benefited? And was the spending prioritized as voters expected? The report  analyzed $2 billion spent on 2\,174 projects in California communities and found decidedly mixed results.”
