SUMMARY:Greenspace Town Halls and Make-A-Thon
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will outline the Greenspace Sustainability Design Make-A-Thon & Town Halls project. A team of students at the University of Central Florida (UCF) (Orlando\, Florida) led a partnership between UCF Student Government\, the UCF Office of Sustainability Initiatives\, and UCF Landscaping and Natural Resources to host a series of events aimed at empowering the campus community to lead the design for a new greenspace on campus. The Greenspace Sustainability Design Town Halls and Make-A-Thon brought together perspectives from stakeholders across the campus and surrounding community to inform the design of the greenspace\, and this series serves as an innovative model that can be used to develop a myriad of sustainable spaces and places by and for campus communities. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Behavioral Strategies to Ditch Desktop Printers
DESCRIPTION:Replacing individual desktop printers with shared ‘multi-function’ printers (MFPs) is one of the most impactful ways campuses can reduce paper use. It also generates a suite of other benefits\, including cost savings on paper\, energy\, ink/toner\, increased security\, and reduced demand on IT staff time. Drawing on AASHE and Root Solution’s recent publication\, Ditching Desktop Printers: A Behavior Change Guide to Cutting Paper Use\, Energy Consumption and Costs\, this webinar will provide step-by-step guidance for implementing a printer consolidation campaign\, including potential intervention ideas based on the results of these surveys. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Plastics: The Last Straw for Big Oil?
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, April 8 for a webinar discussing Plastics: The Last Straw for Big Oil?\, a report addressing the risks of overinvestment in plastics infrastructure. We will provide a brief overview of the report and hear from subject matter experts on the issues of stranded assets\, climate risks\, environmental justice\, community health\, plastic waste\, and corporate commitments. \nThe full report – Plastics: The Last Straw for Big Oil? An Investor Brief on the Risks of Overinvestment in Petrochemicals will be available on our website also on April 8\, 2021. \nThis report informs investors about the expansive risks facing Big Oil’s big bet on plastics — including stranded assets\, climate change impacts\, plastic pollution of land and oceans\, community health impacts\, the greenwashing of “circular” solutions\, and a loss of social license to operate. In a decarbonizing world\, companies who do not adequately prepare for the clean energy transition face systemic decline. Investors need transparent disclosure about company investments into petrochemicals – especially plastics – and how companies are addressing the risks and momentum against fossil-based plastics and climate change. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Environmental Justice and Activism Community Conversations
DESCRIPTION:At Zero Waste UCLA (a division of UCLA Sustainability)\, one of our main goals is to diversify our narrative in regards to sustainability practices across the board. We want to acknowledge the greenwashing and whitewashing of the zero waste movement and collaborate with different clubs around campus to create a space for everyone’s voices to be heard. SUMMARY:Ursus Environmental Symposium: Ballona Wetlands and the Future of Southern California Coastal Conservation
DESCRIPTION:With almost all of Southern California’s coastal wetlands degraded or destroyed by development\, and a need to provide the public with more opportunities to enjoy nature\, the proposed restoration of Los Angeles’ Ballona Wetlands would appear to be a goal laudable to conservationists\, and a potential model for similar efforts elsewhere in the State. However\, scientific debates and sharp policy differences have arisen regarding the future course for the Ballona Wetlands. This Ursus Symposium will bring together top UCLA scientists with key figures involved in the Ballona Wetlands Restoration Project to offer their perspectives in a dialogue on this important issue and wider implications. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Do We Have The Science\, Tools and Policies Needed to Predict Wildfire and Its Impacts in California?
DESCRIPTION:Our experience over the last five years documents the extreme and multifaceted risk posed by wildfires to California’s public safety\, environmental health\, and economic well-being. The underlying drivers of the current crisis are many but the impacts of a warming climate are not only intensifying the likely risks but also injecting additional uncertainty about the future extent and timing of wildfires. In particular\, it is the interaction of linked causal agents that have the potential to produce environmental surprises. This talk will review our understanding of the current state of affairs and then outline the science gaps that must be filled to limit the extent of unanticipated outcomes. \nREGISTER HERE \n \nDr. John J. Battles\, Professor of Forest Ecology at UC Berkeley\, is a field scientist engaged in long-term research of temperate forest ecosystems. His goal is to understand how and why forests change. Towards this end\, his research seeks to understand the dynamic response of forest communities to disturbances and perturbations such as air pollution\, invasive species\, forest management\, extreme drought\, and fire. His recent work has focused on understanding the interactions among disturbances in order to assess their potential to reshape forests. \n \nDr. Alex Hall is a professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and Director of the Center for Climate Science at UCLA. His research is aimed at predicting and understanding climate change impacts at scales relevant to decision-makers\, especially in the State of California. Alex and his team are currently studying the future of wildfire in California and are working with water management agencies in the Los Angeles region to ensure sustainability of water resources under climate change. \n \nMr. Wright serves as Interim Director of the CA Forest Management Task Force.  He was previously the Executive Director of the California Tahoe Conservancy\, a state agency in the Lake Tahoe Basin\, where he led the development of the Lake Tahoe Basin Forest Action Plan and launched both the Tahoe-Central Sierra Initiative and the Lake Tahoe West Forest Restoration Partnership.  Wright was previously the Director of the CALFED Bay-Delta Program\, where he led a consortium of agencies and stakeholders in developing and managing one of the nation’s largest collaborative water management programs.  He has also served as Deputy Secretary of the California Resources Agency\, Senior Policy Advisor to the Regional Administrator of EPA and the Deputy Secretary of Interior\, and held positions in EPA’s Air and Water Management Programs in San Francisco. \n
