Rosanna Xia will discuss her work as an environmental reporter and storyteller for the Los Angeles Times\, including the story she broke in the fall about decades of previously unknown DDT dumping in the Catalina Channel. \nIn the second part of the event\, Mark Gold (Deputy Secretary\, Coast and Oceans\, California Natural Resources Agency) and Sean Hecht (Faculty\, UCLA Law School) will join to discuss the implications of this DDT dumping ground and what can be done about it. Jon Christensen (Professor at the UCLA Institute of Environment and Sustainability) will moderate both conversations.

DESCRIPTION:ZOOM LINK\nThe UCOP Sustainability Affinity Group\, in partnership with the UCOP Department of Energy and Sustainability\, invite the UC community to participate in “Sustainability at Home”\, a three-part virtual speaker series event in celebration of Earth Month (April). \nPart one of the speaker series will kick-off on Wednesday\, February 24th from 12-1pm with a presentation by UC Master Gardener\, Shilpa Thanawala. UC Master Gardeners are volunteers trained and certified by the University of California to provide research-based information about home horticulture and pest management. They serve their communities by answering questions from the public\, teaching workshops\, leading plant clinics\, and speaking on a variety of subjects. \nDuring this one hour presentation\, Shilpa will demonstrate how we can be sustainable at home by planting spring herbs and vegetables (Her tomatoes in containers are legendary!) and answer any gardening questions you may have. So\, grab a fork and join us for this lunchtime presentation! \nThe celebration continues next month with a UC Master Composter presentation on recycling and composting and concludes in April with a presentation on canning\, pickling and dehydration by UC Master Food Preservers.

SUMMARY:The Impact of Climate and the Physical Environment on Human Health
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE\nAbout the speaker: \nRichard Joseph Jackson\, MD MPH FAAP HonAIA HonFASLA\, is Professor emeritus at the Fielding School of Public Health at the University of California\, Los Angeles\, where he was Department Chair in Environmental Health Science. A pediatrician\, he has served in many leadership positions with the California Health Department\, including the highest as the State Health Officer.  For nine years he was Director of the CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health and received the Presidential Distinguished Service Award.  In October\, 2011\, he was elected to the National Academy of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and since 2019 he has been co-lead of the NAM’s Health and Climate Interest Group. \nJackson was instrumental in establishing the California Birth Defects Monitoring Program and in the creation of state and national laws to reduce risks from pesticides\, especially to farm workers and to children. While at CDC he established major environmental public health programs and instituted the federal effort to “biomonitor” chemical levels in the US population.  He has received its Hero Award from the Breast Cancer Fund; Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Public Health Law Association and from the New Partners for Smart Growth; the John Heinz Award for national leadership in the Environment; the Sedgwick Memorial Medal\, the highest award of the American Public Health Association for Distinguished Service.  In 2015 he received the Henry Hope Reed Award for his contributions to Architecture. \nDick Jackson lectures and speaks on many issues\, particularly those related to Climate Heating\, Built Environment\, and Health.  He co-authored the books: Urban Sprawl and Public Health\, Making Healthy Places\, and Designing Healthy Communities for which he hosted a four hour PBS series. He has served on many environment and health boards\, as well as the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Architects. He is an elected Honorary Fellow of American Institute of Architects and elected Honorary Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Jackson has testified before the US Congress and California Legislature many times.  He is from Newark NJ.  When he was age 3\, his World War 2 fighter pilot father died of polio.  He and his spouse\, Joan\, live in Berkeley\, California\, and have three grown children and five grandchildren.

DESCRIPTION:Please join the Emmett Institute this Wednesday\, March 3\, at 12:15 p.m. PST\, for a talk with Harvard Law professor Richard Lazarus to discuss his book\, The Rule of Five: Making Climate History at the Supreme Court\, on the landmark Massachusetts v. EPA decision and the court’s role in environmental law and policy. \nREGISTER HERE\nWhen the Supreme Court announced its ruling in Massachusetts v. EPA the decision was hailed as a landmark\, leading EPA to regulate carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions as pollutants and making possible important environmental safeguards which the Trump administration sought to unravel\, and which President Biden is now planning to restore. The case has been recognized as the most important environmental law decision made by the Supreme Court. \nAt an Emmett Institute book talk on Wednesday\, March 3\, Richard Lazarus\, Howard and Katherine Aibel Professor of Law at Harvard Law School\, and author of The Rule of Five: Making Climate History at the Supreme Court\, will describe how accidents\, infighting\, luck\, superb lawyering\, and the arcane practices of the Supreme Court collided to produce a legal miracle. Cara Horowitz\, Andrew Sabin Family Foundation Co-Executive Director of the Emmett Institute\, will moderate the conversation.

DESCRIPTION:Why are people of color excluded from the environmental movement? Why do so few Black and Brown folks go camping or to national parks? Why is it that Indigenous communities\, who are stewards of the land\, don’t get represented on larger environmental decisions? Why do so many students of color feel disconnected from nature and outdoor spaces? \nSCECon 2021: Our World\, Our Time\, Our Voices aims to recenter the environmental narrative around environmental justice by giving intentional space for students of color to learn about unique and intersectional environmental topics and share our own view of environmentalism. As members of a multi-faceted community\, we must come together to build harmony\, focusing on equity\, peace\, and collective liberation. Our conference is focused on democratizing environmental education through engaging panels and both individual and community-based activism workshops. \nWe hope to lay the groundwork to start a larger conversation and movement about what environmentalism means to us\, as students of color in the 21st century. SUMMARY:Sustaining a Community Garden
DESCRIPTION:In 2016\, Palo Alto College launched a survey campaign to identify the most pressing issues for student retention and learning. The results showed that one of the most pressing issues was food insecurity. This concern caused Palo Alto College to partner with the San Antonio Food Bank to address the issue of student hunger with an on-campus food pantry and Community Garden for both students and community members. The neighborhoods surrounding Palo Alto College are considered a “food desert” — an area lacking access to healthy\, affordable food found at grocery stores\, farmers markets\, and healthy food providers. Programming at the garden aims to create a culture of sustainability by including educational components to inform the community about nutrition\, gardening techniques\, and space is available for community members to grow their own food and increase their food sovereignty. The Community Garden staff have partnered with the Horticulture and Agriculture program to allow students to gain hands-on experiential learning outside of the classroom that prepares them for real-world scenarios. \nREGISTER HERE

A team of students at the University of Central Florida (UCF) (Orlando\, Florida) led a partnership between UCF Student Government\, the UCF Office of Sustainability Initiatives\, and UCF Landscaping and Natural Resources to host a series of events aimed at empowering the campus community to lead the design for a new greenspace on campus. The Greenspace Sustainability Design Town Halls and Make-A-Thon brought together perspectives from stakeholders across the campus and surrounding community to inform the design of the greenspace\, and this series serves as an innovative model that can be used to develop a myriad of sustainable spaces and places by and for campus communities. \nREGISTER HERE

DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE\nIn celebration of Earth Month\, join the University of California\, Merced for a discussion with Professor Asmeret Asefaw Berhe. \nBio: Professor Asmeret Asefaw Berhe is a Professor of Soil Biogeochemistry\, and Falasco Chair in Earth Sciences at the Department of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of California\, Merced. She is also the Interim Dean of the Graduate Division at UC Merced\, a past Chair of the US National Committee on Soil Science at the National Academies and Associate Editor of AGU’s Journal of Geophysical Research – Biogeosciences and Elementa. She received her Ph.D. in Biogeochemistry from the University of California (UC)\, Berkeley\, a M. Sc. in Resource Development (Political Ecology) from Michigan State University\, and a B. Sc. in Soil and Water Conservation from University of Asmara\, Eritrea. She completed her postdoc at UC Berkeley and UC Davis as a University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellow. Her research focus is on biogeochemical cycling of essential elements (esp. carbon\, nitrogen\, and phosphorus) in the soil system.
