SUMMARY:Environmental Justice and Activism Community Conversations
DESCRIPTION:At Zero Waste UCLA (a division of UCLA Sustainability)\, one of our main goals is to diversify our narrative in regards to sustainability practices across the board. We want to acknowledge the greenwashing and whitewashing of the zero waste movement and collaborate with different clubs around campus to create a space for everyone’s voices to be heard. Our Community Conversation creates this space while also providing some information on how zero waste is related to environmental justice and how we can advocate for change. \nWaste Awareness Week Website \nZOOM LINK

SUMMARY:Ursus Environmental Symposium: Ballona Wetlands and the Future of Southern California Coastal Conservation
DESCRIPTION:With almost all of Southern California’s coastal wetlands degraded or destroyed by development\, and a need to provide the public with more opportunities to enjoy nature\, the proposed restoration of Los Angeles’ Ballona Wetlands would appear to be a goal laudable to conservationists\, and a potential model for similar efforts elsewhere in the State. However\, scientific debates and sharp policy differences have arisen regarding the future course for the Ballona Wetlands. This Ursus Symposium will bring together top UCLA scientists with key figures involved in the Ballona Wetlands Restoration Project to offer their perspectives in a dialogue on this important issue and wider implications. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Do We Have The Science\, Tools and Policies Needed to Predict Wildfire and Its Impacts in California?
DESCRIPTION:Our experience over the last five years documents the extreme and multifaceted risk posed by wildfires to California’s public safety\, environmental health\, and economic well-being. The underlying drivers of the current crisis are many but the impacts of a warming climate are not only intensifying the likely risks but also injecting additional uncertainty about the future extent and timing of wildfires. In particular\, it is the interaction of linked causal agents that have the potential to produce environmental surprises. This talk will review our understanding of the current state of affairs and then outline the science gaps that must be filled to limit the extent of unanticipated outcomes. \nREGISTER HERE \n \nDr. John J. Battles\, Professor of Forest Ecology at UC Berkeley\, is a field scientist engaged in long-term research of temperate forest ecosystems. His goal is to understand how and why forests change. Towards this end\, his research seeks to understand the dynamic response of forest communities to disturbances and perturbations such as air pollution\, invasive species\, forest management\, extreme drought\, and fire. His recent work has focused on understanding the interactions among disturbances in order to assess their potential to reshape forests. \n \nDr. Alex Hall is a professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and Director of the Center for Climate Science at UCLA. His research is aimed at predicting and understanding climate change impacts at scales relevant to decision-makers\, especially in the State of California. Alex and his team are currently studying the future of wildfire in California and are working with water management agencies in the Los Angeles region to ensure sustainability of water resources under climate change. \n \nMr. Wright serves as Interim Director of the CA Forest Management Task Force.  He was previously the Executive Director of the California Tahoe Conservancy\, a state agency in the Lake Tahoe Basin\, where he led the development of the Lake Tahoe Basin Forest Action Plan and launched both the Tahoe-Central Sierra Initiative and the Lake Tahoe West Forest Restoration Partnership.  Wright was previously the Director of the CALFED Bay-Delta Program\, where he led a consortium of agencies and stakeholders in developing and managing one of the nation’s largest collaborative water management programs.  He has also served as Deputy Secretary of the California Resources Agency\, Senior Policy Advisor to the Regional Administrator of EPA and the Deputy Secretary of Interior\, and held positions in EPA’s Air and Water Management Programs in San Francisco. \n

SUMMARY:UC Center for Climate Justice Launch Event
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Climate Justice is a University of California system wide initiative to address climate change as a social justice and equity issue. \nClimate justice recognizes the disproportionate impacts of climate change on low-income communities and BIPOC communities around the world\, the people and places least responsible for the problem. The UC Center for Climate Justice seeks solutions that address the root causes of climate change and in doing so\, simultaneously address a broad range of social\, racial\, and environmental injustices. \nThe Center’s vision is a world where broad-scale climate action is driven by science and a systems perspective\, with social and ecological justice at the forefront. We aim to center issues of equity in addressing climate change\, working collaboratively with researchers\, educators\, NGOs\, activists\, policymakers\, philanthropists\, Indigenous and community leaders\, and private sector actors who are fighting for climate justice in California and beyond. Through innovative research\, transformative education\, and public engagement\, we are committed to empowering the next generation of climate justice leaders. \nThe Center for Climate Justice launch event will be held over two days\, April 22-23\, 2021\, beginning on Earth Day. SUMMARY:Plastic Bag Store: The Film
DESCRIPTION:All CAP UCLA online performance programs in our 2020-21 Season will be free\, click here to create a login for CAP UCLA Online.  \n\nCreated by award-winning Brooklyn-based artist\, puppet designer and director Robin Frohardt\, The Plastic Bag Store was conceived as an immersive installation and puppet-theater piece designed to take place in a storefront retail space. Yucky Shards cereal\, Bagorade sports drink\, Fabags deodorizers boasting “that fresh bag scent”\, rotisserie chickens\, cupcakes and sushi are among the thousands of hand sculpted items—all made from discarded plastic bags. The store was scheduled to open in March 2020 to coincide with New York’s plastic bag ban but was postponed due to the city’s COVID-19 lockdown ultimately opening in a vacant Times Square storefront for a limited audience in Fall 2020 earning a spot on the NY Times’ Best of 2020 Theater list. For L.A. audiences\, Frohardt and her team will reimagine a visit to The Plastic Bag Store through a new film commissioned by CAP UCLA. \nPlastic Bag Store: The Film transforms the installation into a dynamic series of stories that traverse ancient history\, the present day and a future dystopia. The Plastic Bag Store employs inventive puppetry\, humor\, craft and a critical lens to explore how the hordes of plastic waste might be misinterpreted by future generations. \nFrohardt states\, “The Plastic Bag Store is a visually rich and humorous experience that hopefully encourages a different way of thinking about the foreverness of plastic\, the permanence of the disposable\, and that there is no ‘away’ when we throw something out. There is great humor to be found in the pitfalls of capitalism—humor and satire can be powerful tools for social criticism especially with issues that feel too sad and overwhelming to confront directly.” \nREGISTER  HERE

SUMMARY:Nobel Prize Summit: Our Planet\, Our Future
DESCRIPTION:Our future depends on our collective ability to become effective stewards of the global commons – the climate\, ice\, land\, ocean\, freshwater\, forests\, soils and rich diversity of life. \nThe first Nobel Prize Summit brings together Nobel Prize laureates\, scientists\, policymakers\, business leaders\, and youth leaders to explore the question: What can be achieved in this decade to put the world on a path to a more sustainable\, more prosperous future for all of humanity? \nAcross three days\, the virtual event will combine keynotes and lively discussion with live performance and theatre. Speakers will explore solutions to some of humanity’s greatest challenges: climate change and biodiversity loss\, increasing inequality\, and technological innovation in support of societal goals. \nThe summit will ask: what can we learn from our collective response to the global pandemic? And\, how can societies distinguish facts from fiction in a new information ecosystem? \nThe Nobel Prize Summit is hosted by the Nobel Foundation and organised by the National Academy of Sciences in partnership with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research\, and the Stockholm Resilience Centre/Beijer Institute. \nREGISTER HERE
