SUMMARY:InterActions LA: Inclusive Approaches to Electric Carsharing
DESCRIPTION:Electric carsharing holds enormous potential for our cities — they can provide safe\, clean\, and convenient ways to travel and\, for those unable to afford personal vehicles\, they increase access to opportunities. Over the past five years\, a new wave of carsharing services supported by public funding using electric vehicles has emerged. Nonprofit models have operated at a large scale in the San Francisco Bay Area\, Chicago\, and elsewhere\, while public and community-controlled programs are emerging in Sacramento and Los Angeles. \nAt this year’s InterActions LA event\, we’ll hear how people have benefited from electric carsharing programs and how agencies of different types may want to get involved. Speakers will also discuss sustainable business models\, operational approaches that can fill mobility gaps\, and outreach strategies to ensure the programs are known to people who stand to benefit the most. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:The Quest for Environmental and Climate Justice
DESCRIPTION:Often described as the father of environmental justice\, TCU professor Robert Bullard is a renowned advocate for those who suffer the earliest and most damaging setbacks from climate change simply because of where they live. His presentation will focus on empowering vulnerable populations in the United States and ensuring that climate change mitigation is fair and equitable. He’ll draw on his background in urban planning and public policy to discuss emergency management\, community resilience and disaster recovery strategies\, offering a framework to dismantle the systemic racism that perpetuates inequality and vulnerability. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:"Saging the World" Movie Showing
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by UCLA’s Special Advisor to the Chancellor on Native American and Indigenous Affairs Mishuana Goeman and California Native Plant Society and Indigenous advocates. \nREGISTER HERE \nPANELISTS: \n\n\n\nHeidi Lucero (Acjachemen and Mustun Ohlone)\nSamantha Morales Johnson (Gabrielino Tongva)\nKimberly Morales Johnson (Gabrielino Tongva)\nNick Rocha (Gabrielino Shoshone)\nCraig Torres (Tongva)\n\n\n\nSage smudging has become a viral trend. What’s the truth behind the smoke? \n“Saging” has become common in movies\, TV shows\, social media\, and cleansing rituals–people burning sage bundles in the hope of purifying space and clearing bad energy. Instead of healing\, the appropriated use of saging in popular culture is having a harmful effect. \nIndigenous communities have tended a relationship with white sage for thousands of generations. White sage (Salvia apiana) only occurs in southern California and northernBaja California\, Mexico. Today\, poachers are stealing metric tons of this plant from the wild to supply international demand. Saging the World spotlights the ecological and cultural issues intertwined with white sage\, centering the voices of Native advocates who have long protected and cherished this plant. \nThe short documentary was produced by Rose Ramirez\, Deborah Small\, and the California Native Plant Society to foster awareness and inspire action for white sage. For more information on the film and ways to support white sage\, visit cnps.org/sagingtheworld.

SUMMARY:Cajetan Iheka on African Ecomedia
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual talk by Professor Cajetan lheka on his new book African Ecomedia: Network Forms\, Planetary Politics (Duke UP 2021)\, followed by a Q&A session. In African Ecomedia\, Cajetan Iheka examines the ecological footprint of media in Africa alongside the representation of environmental issues in visual culture. Iheka shows how\, through visual media such as film\, photography\, and sculpture\, African artists deliver a unique perspective on the socioecological costs of media production\, from mineral and oil extraction to the politics of animal conservation. These works highlight not only the exploitation of African workers and the vast scope of environmental degradation but also the resourcefulness and creativity of African media makers. They point to the unsustainability of current practices while acknowledging our planet’s finite natural resources. In foregrounding Africa’s centrality to the production and disposal of media technology\, Iheka shows the important place visual media has in raising awareness of and documenting ecological disaster even as it remains complicit in it. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Emissions Trading in California: Lessons for China
DESCRIPTION:As countries and subnational jurisdictions begin to orient their climate change policies toward mid-century carbon neutrality goals\, market measures have taken a prominent role in many emissions-reductions plans. However\, much of the scholarly work on the efficacy of carbon-pricing mechanisms\, and particularly emissions-trading systems\, has taken place in the realm of theoretical\, ex ante analysis. Whether the theoretical advantages of emissions trading hold in practice\, therefore\, remains a crucial question for the direction of climate policy. \nREGISTER HERE \nChina is one of the countries that is using emissions trading as a major prong of its climate strategy\, and its national tradable performance standard program\, launched last year\, accounts for nearly half of the greenhouse gas emissions subject to an emissions-trading system. California is one of the few jurisdictions with a relatively long period of experience in implementing an emissions-trading system that covers most greenhouse gasses emitted in the state. As China works on implementing and adjusting its system\, therefore\, it may be beneficial for it to consider some of the lessons learned by California regulators. \nJoin environmental policy experts from California and China for a webinar to address these issues and discuss findings from a forthcoming report from the UCLA Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment and Energy Foundation China\, Emissions Trading in California: Lessons for China.

SUMMARY:The Role of Preferential Sampling
DESCRIPTION:  \nSponsored by UCLA Departments of Statistics and Biostatistics and the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. \nAbstract: The notion of preferential sampling was introduced into the literature in the seminal paper of Diggle et al. (2010) Subsequently\, there has been considerable follow-up research. A standard illustration arises in geostatistical modeling. Consider the objective of inferring about environmental exposures. If environmental monitors are only placed in locations where environmental levels tend to be high\, then interpolation based upon observations from these locations will necessarily produce only high predictions. A remedy lies in the suitable spatial design of the locations\, e.g.\, a random or space-filling design for locations over the region of interest is expected to preclude such bias. However\, in practice\, sampling may be designed in order to learn about areas of high exposure. \nWhile the set of sampling locations may not have been developed randomly\, we study it as if it was a realization of a spatial point process. That is\, it may be designed/specified in some fashion but not necessarily with the intention of being roughly uniformly distributed over D. Then\, the question becomes a stochastic one: is the realization of the responses independent of the realization of the locations? If no\, then we have what is called preferential sampling. Importantly\, the dependence here is stochastic dependence. Notationally/functionally\, the responses are associated with the locations. \nAnother setting is the case of species distribution modeling with a binary response\, presence or absence\, recorded at locations. Here\, bias can arise when sampling is designed such that ecologists will tend to sample where they expect to find individuals. This setting can be extended to data fusion where we have both presence/absence data and presence-only data. Other potential applications include missing data settings and hedonic modeling for price with property sales. Very recent work explores preferential sampling in the context of multivariate geostatistical modeling. \nFundamental issues are: (i) can we identify the occurrence of a preferential sampling effect\, (ii) can we adjust inference in the presence of preferential sampling\, and (iii) when can such adjustment improve predictive performance over a customary geostatistical model? We consider these issues in a modeling context and illustrate with application to presence/absence data\, to property sales\, and to tree data where we observe mean diameter at breast height (MDBH) and trees per hectare (TPH). (This is joint work with Shinichiro Shirota and Lucia Paci.)
