SUMMARY:Lecture - California's Climate Future: Water and the Sierra Nevada
DESCRIPTION:Reservations Required \nCalifornia’s Climate Future: Water and the Sierra Nevada \nOver the past few years\, Californians saw firsthand the consequences of hotter-than-normal temperatures and a smaller-than-normal Sierra Nevada snowpack—historically low reservoir levels\, dying trees and increased wildfire risk\, to name a few. You may be wondering\, “If things are like this now\, what will they be like in the future\, as our climate continues to change?” \nUCLA Professor Alex Hall and his research team have set out to understand just how climate change will impact the mountain landscapes we love and the snowpack California depends on for water. Using innovative techniques\, the team has produced first-of-their-kind projections that capture the intricate physical processes affecting climate in the Sierra. \nPresentation by Alex Hall\, Director\, Center for Climate Science\, UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability \nQ&A to follow\, moderated by Peter Kareiva\, Director\, UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability \nReservations required.

SUMMARY:Luskin Innovators Speaker Series: Chasing Water featuring Brian Richter
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join the Luskin Center for Innovation in welcoming Brian Richter discuss his book Chasing Water: A Guide for Moving from Scarcity to Sustainability. Panel discussion to follow Richter’s presentation. Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be served. Registration is free; seating is first come\, first served. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWater scarcity is spreading and intensifying in many regions of the world\, with dire consequences for local communities\, economies\, and freshwater ecosystems. Current approaches tend to rely on policies crafted at the state or national level\, which on their own have proved insufficient to arrest water scarcity. To be durable and effective\, water plans must be informed by the culture\, economics\, and varied needs of affected community members. \nInternational water expert Brian Richter argues that sustainable water sharing in the twenty-first century can only happen through open\, democratic dialogue and local collective action. In Chasing Water\, Richter tells a cohesive and complete story of water scarcity: where it is happening\, what is causing it\, and how it can be addressed. Through his engaging and nontechnical style\, he strips away the complexities of water management to its bare essentials\, providing information and practical examples that will empower community leaders\, activists\, and students to develop successful and long-lasting water programs. \nChasing Water will provide local stakeholders with the tools and knowledge they need to take an active role in the watershed-based planning and implementation that are essential for water supplies to remain sustainable in perpetuity. \nPanelists include: \n\nLiz Crosson\, Office of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti\nAngela George\, Los Angeles County Department of Public Works\nDebbie Franco\, California Governor’s Office of Planning and Research\nGreg Pierce (moderator)\, UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation

SUMMARY:M. Kravčík: Restoring Watersheds for Severe Climate Protection
DESCRIPTION:An Evening with Michal Kravčík: (Slovakian Hydrologist\, Engineer\, Goldman Prize Winner and Ashoka Fellow) \nWatershed Restoration Can Protect Us from Severe Climate Impacts \nWe’ll explore together\, employing Michal’s deep global expertise\, the development of major new local initiatives and innovations of TreePeople\, Kiss the Ground\, the Council for Watershed Health\, and the County and City of Los Angeles to protect our communities from the extreme climate impacts of drought\, long term water shortages\, increasing fatal heat events\, flooding\, and wildfires. \nMichal Kravčík\, Dipl Ing. PhD. is a founding member and Chairman of the NGO People And Water in his native Slovakia. Dr. Kravčík is a noted practical activist\, promoting awareness and urging the restoration of vital natural water cycles needed to address global climate change effectively. In his work throughout the globe he has illustrated how disruptions to small land-based water cycles in particular\, relate to many increasingly observed effects of climate change\, including droughts\, floods\, erosion\, wildfires\, extreme weather events\, and sea level rise. Most importantly\, Dr. Kravčík has a track record of fostering action that demonstrates his theories; from creating and managing complete programs to assisting with conceptual integration\, ongoing directional guidance and/or specific technical consulting for ongoing projects. Dr. Kravčík is accomplished in many areas\, including as water management engineer (graduated at the Civil Engineering Faculty of Slovak Technical University\, Slovakia)\, hydrologist\, consultant\, teacher\, sustainable program developer\, author and speaker/lecturer. He began his professional career working for eight years at the Slovak Academy of Sciences before spending several years consulting on urban storm water management practices and projects primarily in Košice (Slovakia’s second largest city).

SUMMARY:Steering Connected and Automated Mobility in the Right Direction: The 10th Annual UCLA Downtown Los Angeles Forum on Transportation\, Land Use and the Environment
DESCRIPTION:Steering Connected and Automated Mobility in the Right Direction\nThe 10th Annual UCLA Downtown Los Angeles Forum on Transportation\, Land Use and the Environment\nThursday\, April 13\n8:00 am – 3:00 pm\nCalifornia Endowment Center for Healthy Communities\nClick here to register\nThis 10th Annual Downtown Los Angeles Forum will focus on practical limitations and concerns of connected and automated vehicle technology. How can policymakers and stakeholders prepare the network and our current transportation system for this next technology wave? New technologies have and will continue to shape the future of transportation. Communities are seeing technology enabled mobility on the ground with on-demand ridesharing and bikesharing. People also understand how technology enhancements can improve the system for policy makers and travelers with real-time transit arrival information\, dynamically-priced parking spaces and managed highway lanes. These changes did bring real improvements to people\, but are these improvements accessible to everyone? Or may they further exacerbate current inequities in our transportation system? \nThe conference speakers will tackle important questions including what will the likely decades-long period look like when conventional\, connected and automated vehicles all need to interact? What investments should cities be prepared to make to maximize the benefits of vehicle connectivity? How can and should public policy makers interact with largely private industry to steer the transformation in the direction of current policy while ensuring the benefits are fairly distributed? \nWe need to prepare now for this next revolution no matter when connected and automated vehicles reach widespread adoption. These technologies hold promise to positively contribute to concerns about traveler safety\, greenhouse gas emissions and continued increasing demands on the transportation system. But\, these promises are not likely to be kept if policymakers cannot proactively address how to steer their adoption in the right direction. The speakers represent a mix of practice and research and the audience can expect a thought-provoking event. \n8:00 – 8:30      Breakfast \n8:30 – 9:00      Setting the stage: How Connected and Automated Technologies May Shape our Future\n \n\nLauren Issac\, 2015 William Barclay Parsons Fellow\, EasyMile\n\n9:00 – 10:30    Practical Limitations and Concerns with Connected and Automated Technology\nPractical concerns and questions abound with the onslaught of this new technology. When will we know if this technology is safe? Who is liable if the technology fails? How will the technology be designed to prevent cyber security attacks? What may be the behavioral response from travelers? This panel presents three speakers discussing how the roll-out of this technology may play out among these real and practical concerns. \nModerator: Madeline Brozen\, UCLA Institute of Transportation Studies \n\n“Vehicle miles traveled and greenhouse gas emissions” Chris Ganson\, California Governor’s Office of Planning and Research\n“Getting the policies in place to support the triple revolution” Susie Pike\, UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies\n“Tort law and vehicle automation” Maya Buenaventura\, RAND Corporation\n\n10:45 – 12:15   Preparing our expectations for travelers and the network\nPrevious technological improvements required little investment from the public sector to operate. This transformation is different as it will require upgrades to traffic signals and other roadside equipment. What are the costs associated with these upgrades? Can current projects be delivered differently now to achieve economies of scale with future improvements? How should long-range transportation plans and other policy documents prepare for these changes? \nModerator: Juan Matute\, UCLA Institute of Transportation Studies \n\n“Assessing network and policy readiness” Veronica Siranosian\, AECOM\n“Planning now for future change” Eric Shaw\, Washington D.C Office of Planning\n“Costing out connected infrastructure” Sam Morrissey\, Iteris\n\n12:15 – 1:30      Lunch \n1:30 – 2:45        What is a city to do? Discussing future on-the-ground direction\nWe will close the event with a discussion with leaders in the field to discuss how connected and automated vehicle technology can be interwoven into the future vision for Los Angeles and cities across the United States. \nModerated by: Jessica Meaney\, Investing in Place  \n\nAshley Hand\, CityFi\nCorinne Kisner\, NACTO\nLauren Issac\, EasyMile\n\n2:45                    Closing remarks\n \n\nBrian Taylor\, UCLA\n\n3:00 – 4:00         Networking reception \n\nLocation\nCalifornia Endowment Center for Healthy Communities\n1000 N. SUMMARY:BioBlitz 2017 at UCLA
DESCRIPTION:Which city has the most nature and the most nature lovers? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn partnership with UCLA’s Sustainable L.A. Grand Challenge\, the City Nature Challenge 2017 (April 14-18) will help us find out! Just in time for National Citizen Science Day (April 15) and Earth Day (April 22)\, 16 U.S. cities are asking residents of these urban areas to explore nature all around them and document the species they find. You’ll be amazed at the biodiversity of plants\, animals\, fungi\, and other organisms living in our midst! \nUsing the iNaturalist app\, groups of participants and experts will conduct a campus BioBlitz – an intense period of biological surveying to record all the living species within an area. We will explore Sage Hill\, the Mildred B. Mathias Botanical Garden\, and the central area of campus. Just bring your smart phone or camera and your curiosity. No previous experience necessarry. \nIn addtion to making UCLA and Los Angeles look good in this competition\, you’ll learn how your organization can use the iNaturalist platform to conduct or contribute to future research projects. Such work will improve the resilience of our local ecosystems in this era of climate change and the need for public support of the sciences. SUMMARY:Net Zero 2017: Energy + Water + Waste
DESCRIPTION:Net Zero 2017\nThe Net Zero Conference\, Energy + Water + Waste\, is the nation’s largest event dedicated to net zero building design. Attendee registration has nearly doubled in each of its first three years\, thereby showing the building industry’s increasing interest in a net zero future. Verdical Group\, the conference organizer\, is projecting the host venue to be at capacity again with 600 attendees for the fourth annual event in August 2017. \nThe conference will include a full program of net zero case study presentations from nationally leading AEC firms\, two panels\, an exhibitor table expo\, and high quality networking opportunities. The conference draws a wide array of high level decision makers and will also provide five Continuing Education Units for AIA\, USGBC\, and LFA professional credential holders. \nThe conference will be held at IBEW’s Net Zero Plus facility in Commerce\, CA. This is a living laboratory complete with a massive solar array and microgrid. The facility produces more energy than it uses annually – making it one of the few net positive energy structures in California. Tours of the facility will also be given at the conference – more information will be announced closer to event day. \nContinuing Education Units\n5 AIA Units\n5 GBCI Units\n5 LFA Units \nSchedule\n7:00 AM — 8:00 AM (1 hr): Registration\, Breakfast\, Networking\, and Exhibitor Tables\n8:00 AM — 10:30 AM (2 hr 30 mins): Welcome and Speaker Sessions\n10:30 AM — 11:00 AM (30 mins): Coffee Break\, Networking\, and Exhibitor Tables\n11:00 AM — 12:00 PM (1 hr): Panel 1\n12:00 PM — 1:00 PM (1 hr): Lunch\n1:00 PM — 3:00 PM (2 hrs): Speaker Sessions / Panel 2\n3:00 PM — 5:00 PM (2 hrs): Facility Tours / Happy Hour \nPremier Sponsor\n \nPlease visit the Conference website for more information:\nwww.verdicalgroup.com/net-zero-2017 \nFREE on-site parking provided by IBEW.
