SUMMARY:Green Building - Innovation in Health and Wellness Series
DESCRIPTION:Innovations in Health and Wellness Series\n\n\n\n\n\nWe believe that health and wellness are imperative to green building and market transformation in this generation. The built environment\, natural environment\, and humankind should exist together to optimize health and foster wellness. Join us for a four-part series exploring the innovations in design exemplified \nin the workplace\, higher education\, healthcare\, and transportation sectors. This speaker series is cultivated by BuroHappold & USGBC-LA\, join us to learn\, share\, and lead green! \nModerator:\nDominique Hargreaves joined the U.S. Green Building Council- LA Chapter (USGBC-LA) in 2008 as the Events Chair while working for a real estate development company in Downtown Los Angeles\, and she has served as USGBC-LA’s Education & Program Manager\, and now as Executive Director. During her tenure she has doubled its membership\, broadened its influence\, and cemented its role as a leadership voice in the global sustainability movement. \nUSGBC-LA’s LEED green building program has been the cornerstone of Dominique’s efforts. Since its national launch more than 2\,000 local commercial and residential projects participate in LEED. Nearly 3\,000 LEED professional credential holders are engaged in advancing this global movement. \nPanel:\nTodd M. Lynch\, AIA\, NCARB\, LEED AP BD+C\, is a Principal Project Planner for UCLA Capital Programs\, specializing in sustainable design and construction\, from planning through post-occupancy. SUMMARY:D r o w n i n g W o r l d - Presentation by Award-Winning Photojournalist Gideon Mendel\, Followed by “The Art of Teaching Climate Change” Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Over the past three years this London-based South African photographer has traveled to flood events in the UK\, India\, Pakistan\, Australia\, Thailand\, Nigeria\, Germany\, The Philippines\, Brazil\, Bangladesh\, and the United States. At each location he outfits himself in waders and submerges himself into the floodwaters to connect with victims and document their stories. The result is a startling collection of still and video portraits of flood survivors taken in deep floodwaters\, within the remains of their homes\, or in submerged landscapes\, in the stillness of once lively environments. Keeping their composure\, the photographed subjects pause in front of Mendel’s camera\, casting an unsettling yet engaging gaze. These images\, taken across the world\, bear witness to a shared experience that erases geographical and cultural divides. They invite viewers to reflect on our impact on nature and\, ultimately\, on our own attachment to our homes and personal belongings. \nGideon Mendel is the inaugural winner of the Pollock-Krasner Prize for Creativity\, awarded in March 2016. Join us on May 12th to meet the artist and learn more about his creative process and arts activism. \nRoundtable Participants:\nGlen MacDonald\nJohn Muir Memorial Chair and Distinguished Professor of Geography\, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\nKatharine Davis Reich\nEnvironmental educator\, UCLA Center for Climate Change Solutions\nRamesh Srinivasan\nAssociate Professor of Information Studies\nAnurima Banerji (Co-moderator)\nAssistant Professor of World Arts and Cultures/Dance\nDavid Gere (Co-moderator)\nProfessor\, World Arts and Cultures/Dance; Director of the UCLA Art & Global Health Center

SUMMARY:Break Free From Fossil Fuels March
DESCRIPTION:Our Health\, Our Climate\, Our Communities\nOn May 14\, 2016 Californians from across the state will convene in Downtown Los Angeles\, the city that is home to the nation’s largest urban oil field in the country. \nWe will march through the heart of L.A. which has become California’s stronghold of the fossil fuel industry and demand that our elected leaders put an end to the oil and gas production that threatens people’s health\, environment\, and future. If California wants to uphold its legacy as a global climate and human rights leader\, then we must keep oil and gas in the ground as we work toward establishing a 100% clean energy future.

SUMMARY:Curbing Carbon Emissions in Dining: A Conversation with ZeroFoodprint (Ticketed Event)
DESCRIPTION:Curbing Carbon Emissions in Dining: A Conversation with ZeroFoodprint\nwith Peter Freed\, Chef Anthony Myint and Chris Ying \nDid you know? \nKernza\, a new grain variety from the Land Institute\, is derived from an ancient form of intermediate wheatgrass that is actually a distant relative of wheat. Kernza is a perennial\, meaning it can be grown year-round\, with roots that live on in the ground through winter. Corn\, wheat\, and most of the other grains we eat\, on the other hand\, are annual crops\, which must be replanted anew every year\, and require seeds\, fertilizers\, and pesticides for each planting. But Kernza’s most important difference–and the reason so many people have been waiting for its arrival–is the way it interacts with the soil. \nAll lecture attendees will enjoy a slice of Kernza bread provided by The Perennial restaurant in San Francisco! \n
