SUMMARY:The People Facing the Sun
DESCRIPTION:Join Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians President Rudy Ortega\, Jr. and Pamela Villaseñor\, Director of the Tribe’s Health and Social Wellness Department\, in conversation with journalist and environmental historian Jon Christensen\, from KCET and UCLA’s Institute of the Environment and Sustainability\, to learn how the local tribe is working with allies in our broader community to protect and restore sacred sites\, preserve and celebrate Traditional Ecological Knowledge and practices\, ensure their children are educated in science and Indigenous wisdom\, and win back the full rights and recognition taken from the Tribe when settler colonialism came to Los Angeles. \nThe conversation is part of Burbank Reads 2021. This year’s selection for Burbank Reads is Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer\, which explores Native American ideas about ecological sustainability\, care for the land\, gratitude for what nature gives us\, and reciprocity\, what we give back to nature\, ideas that challenge us to consider our contemporary relationship with the “other than human” world. \nREGISTER HERE\n

SUMMARY:The Most Overlooked Birds in America: Females
DESCRIPTION:Female birds are typically more drab and inconspicuous than males\, leading over time to an unconscious bias towards male birds in birdwatching\, photography\, and even in our ornithology knowledge. This talk explores the history of focus on male birds\, female vocalizations\, conservation implications of overlooking female birds\, and female bird identification tips. \nJoanna Wu is a PhD student studying female birds in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UCLA. She previously worked at the National Audubon Society and is a member of the Galbatross Project\, a group of birders\, scientists\, writers\, and conservationists who are passionate about spreading awareness about female birds. \nThe presentation will be online at: https://bluejeans.com/956877518/7384 \nDownload a calendar invite: https://www.laaudubon.org/events/2021/10/13/tyrt38tay8wz7mzq0l4s0k8fu518g7

SUMMARY:Whitewashed Botany
DESCRIPTION:Join Alexandria Douziech\, founder of the Center for Plants & Culture\, to see her new exhibit on botany’s “whitewashed” and exploitative legacy. This installation will focus on colonial injustices often excluded from plant displays: the forgotten figures of natural history\, the cultural erasure of specimen collecting\, and how plant commercialization benefited a select few. Viewers will also be encouraged to imagine a “decolonized” future for botanical spaces. \nREGISTER HERE \nCOVID-19 Information \nOur space is well ventilated and the glass walls of the La Kretz Garden Pavilion will be open to further increase air circulation. Out of an abundance of caution\, we ask that all attendees wear a mask during this event and to bring proof of vaccination with them. We are planning to record this event as well to make it available virtually after the event—details to follow. \nRSVP / Tickets \nThis event is free\, but seating is limited—RSVP required to reserve a seat. \nPlan Your Visit & Parking \nCheck our website for more information on planning your visit and parking. The Botanical Garden closes at 5pm\, so come early to walk around and explore! \nCenter For Plants & Culture: Website / Instagram / Twitter
