Leave A Smaller Footprint Behind at UCLA’s 2nd Annual Sustainable Bruin Move Out

The time for students to go is soon, with Bruins who live on-campus in residence halls and off-campus in Westwood Village supported in leaving sustainably with two collection events known as Sustainable Bruin Move Out.

A dozen campus departments, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations are teaming up again to make this an annual tradition after launching last year: helping minimize waste and reduce the environmental impact of the massive departure of UCLA students for the summer at the end of the academic year.

Sustainable Bruin Move Out aims to keep debris from piling up in the neighborhood and give no longer needed yet good, useable belongings a second life by storing and saving them for when students return in the fall. Rethinking your rubbish is good for people and the planet! Acceptable household items for donation include artwork and décor, books, kitchenware, small electronics and working appliances, furniture, and gently used towels and blankets. Bedding and associated items, medical supplies, and electronic waste cannot be donated.

Bruins, are you ready for an eco-minded move-out this June? Leave your UCLA home better than you found it and reduce your carbon footprint by repurposing salvageable items and sustainably discarding others at Sustainable Bruin Move Out events on June 11 for on-campus residents and June 12 for those residing off-campus in the North Village.

On Campus Sustainable BruIN MoveOut
Wednesday, June 11, 2025 – 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Students who reside on-campus in residence halls will be able to donate small gently used dorm supplies, clothes, old electronics, and more for future Bruins. Residence Halls will host donation boxes in lobby areas and in front of De Neve, Sunset Village, Reiber, and Hedrick for donation of gently used household items. The items collected on the Hill will be made available for new students to purchase when they move into the dorms and apartments in the Fall. Students donating items will also receive a voucher for a discount at next fall’s thrift sale.

Off Campus Sustainable Bruin Move Out
Thursday, June 12, 2025 – 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Students who reside off-campus in the North Westwood Village will be able to donate and/or dispose of unwanted bulky items at Weyburn Place, Gayley Avenue and Veteran Avenue, and Strathmore Drive and Levering Avenue. These drop-off locations will provide opportunities to donate gently used items to nonprofit organizations. The locations will also serve as waste disposal zones for those items that cannot be repurposed. Staff will be on hand to help determine if items can be donated or need to be discarded.

Help is needed to collect, sort, and transport donations. To volunteer at the on or off-campus event, sign up with the Volunteer Center.

“By participating in this initiative, students are playing a crucial role in significantly reducing waste and ensuring that unwanted bulky items don’t end up cluttering our streets,” said Los Angeles City Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky, a UCLA alumna who office is involved in staging Sustainable Bruin Move Out.

“This event represents a collective commitment to sustainability and keeping our communities clean.”
