How to Be a Sustainable Bruin

Green habits you can adopt for the environment.

Fall into these practices as the back-to-school season kicks off at UCLA, and stay sustainable all quarter and through the rest of the academic year. Be blue, gold, and green with the following 7 tips.

  1. Move in mindfully
Start sustainably if you are coming back to after summer break and moving into campus housing or an off-campus residence. Light up your new space with energy-efficient bulbs and unplug devices when not in use. UCLA Housing has additional guidance for greening your return to campus here.
  1. Rely on reusables
Avoid single-use items and bring your own water bottle, coffee cup, utensils, food containers, bags, plus refillable containers for soap, shampoo, and conditioner.
ASUCLA has two programs to help with this action item: Reuzzi and Reusables at their dining locations.
  1. Minimize your waste
UCLA has a centralized waste system, with three-stream bins: compost, recycle, and landfill. Sorting rubbish responsibly helps keep discarded materials from piling up in the dump.
  1. Eat for the planet
UCLA’s award-winning, sustainable dining offers locally sourced, fresh, and healthy meal options, including plenty of plant-based fare. Cutting back on meat is one of the most effective ways to lower your environmental impact.
  1. Be a conscious consumer
Be thrifty and shop pre-loved. Donate items you no longer need so they too can have a second life.
  1. Go green
Get around campus and explore Los Angeles by walking, biking, taking public transportation, or carpooling. Both students and employees have access to subsidized transit passes provided by the university.
  1. Be engaged!
Get involved through a student club or organization, study sustainability by taking a class on the subject, participate in green activities and events, and follow UCLA Sustainability on Instagram, Facebook, and X for more resources.
