Internship, Argento/Graham

Argento/Graham, is searching for a paid project management intern in the green building industry. Please see the attached description for more details. If anyone is interested, please have them send a resume and cover letter to hello@argentograham.com.

Editor and Policy Manager, VerdeXchange (two positions)

Seeking an editor for a small but respected publication covering public policy, land use, urban planning, and infrastructure in the Los Angeles area. The position will also serve as policy manager/chief-of-staff/co-coordinator for a small clean energy and green economy think-tank that organizes a yearly conference covering clean energy technology, climate change policy, and environmental innovation.
The ideal candidate will come with a strong educational background in environmental policy, urban planning, or liberal arts. She or he should be perceptive, flexible, organized, independent, and a strong writer. Candidates should have a combination of experience and interest in journalism/public affairs and public policy issues surrounding land use, sustainability and city-building.
Comfort with networking and the desire to enmesh one’s self within the civic infrastructure of Los Angeles is key to succeeding and enjoying this opportunity. Familiarity with and fascination for Los Angeles is essential. This is a mid-/entry-level position, but is appropriate for someone who learns quickly.
Candidates should have some experience in policy, planning, community development, local government, sustainability, and/or public affairs or journalism. Prior knowledge of editing or publishing is an asset but not necessary.

Editor

Working under the direction of the publisher, the editor bears responsibility for all content (mainly long-form interviews) and ancillary operations, including promotion, subscription management, website updates, and special projects. This is a small operation, and the publication’s remarkable access to public and private-sector industry leaders in Southern California creates a unique, demanding, and rewarding experience for the right candidate.

Policy Manager

Working under direction of the chairman of an annual, global conference that features the best and brightest in the “green” and clean energy economy, the policy manager will oversee marketing and PR of the event through print and digital media (producing email blasts, tailored advertisements, press releases, and a quarterly print newsletter, as well as managing the conference website, registration platform, and database of participants).
Policy manager will work with chairman to plan panels and events for the conference, so interest in clean energy, transportation, water, resilience, and finance is essential for enjoying the fast-paced environment of planning the conference. This provides the manager an impressive opportunity to interact and learn from leading national, state, regional, and Los Angeles policymakers that are shaping today and tomorrow’s policy.
Co-coordination duties—as the result of a lean, in-house operation—requires a solid problem-solving ethos, the ability to manage multiple projects at the same time, flexibility, and willingness to take on additional tasks as they arise. As with any conference planning, the policy manager must be able to fully dedicate the weeks leading up to the conference to work.
The job also entails a number of engaging, interesting consulting and subcontracting projects in the fields of transportation, water, clean energy, and civic engagement. The policy manager will gain experience in helping to manage projects that have direct impacts on Los Angeles’s policy landscape.
The start date is flexible, although we are hoping for someone to begin work in early 2019.
Please submit a resume and/or questions to ross@verdexchange.org. With apologies, a high volume of emails may preclude responses.

Friends of the Earth 2019 Fellowship

Friends of the Earth is a hard-hitting, progressive, environmental organization that pulls no punches and speaks sometimes uncomfortable truth to power. It’s an approach that has worked for four decades to produce important victories that help protect our planet and its people. We’re part of Friends of the Earth International, the world’s largest federation of grassroots environmental groups, working in more than 70 countries on today’s most urgent environmental and social issues.

FOE envisions a world where we live within the ability of the planet to sustain life, and in which all people live with dignity, health and equity. We believe that both environmental crises, as well as widespread social injustice, are intertwined symptoms of flawed ideological, economic and political systems that are violating peoples’ rights, perpetuating oppression, failing to meet the needs of people, and destroying the planet.

We believe that increasing racial diversity within environmental organizations is critical to the future success of our movement. Our Fellowship program is designed to increase the long-term effectiveness of FOE and the environmental movement by operating an inspiring and fulfilling fellowship program that builds skills and relevant job experience for people of color and members of underrepresented communities.

This fellowship aims to create a pathway for people in underrepresented communities to gain further opportunities in environmental advocacy. For our program, we are prioritizing communities that are underrepresented in the mainstream environmental movement. Women, people of color, and youth are highly encouraged to apply. If you do not identify as part of an underrepresented community, that is not a disqualification and we encourage you to apply as well.

About The Fellowship: Each year, we welcome a cohort of five Fellows to work with us full-time for six months in our Washington, DC headquarters. Fellows are paid $20/hour and will receive a one-time stipend of $1,000. Fellows are placed with our Climate & Energy, Economic Policy, Food & Agriculture, Oceans & Vessels, or Organizing teams. In addition to substantive work with the teams, the Fellowship program also includes networking and career development opportunities. The fellowship begins on January 7, 2019 and ends on June 28, 2019. Position Summary

As part of our Market Transformation team, LACI is seeking a Director of Transportation to build and expand LACI’s transportation and mobility related activities, and advance LACI’s transportation electrification and zero emissions goods movement initiative (aka, LACI Center for Transportation Innovation).

As part of LACI’s mission to create an inclusive green economy, LACI’s work to accelerate transportation electrification and zero emissions goods movement is being integrated across the organization, including in the organization’s Unlocking Innovation program (e.g., supporting portfolio companies that advance transportation electrification) and Enhancing Communities program (e.g., piloting zero emissions mobility technologies in disadvantaged communities).

Central to the Director of Transportation role is helping manage the LACI transportation electrification initiative, or LACI Center for Transportation Innovation (CTI). LACI is convening and facilitating a top tier group of regional, state, and Industry stakeholders with the goal of dramatically accelerating the Los Angeles region’s transition to a zero emission, shared, and electric transportation future by 2028.  The Director of Transportation will play a critical role in shaping and launching LACI’s related programming and managing and growing LACI’s related partnerships.

The Director of Transportation will also serve as LACI’s internal subject matter expert on the mobility and transportation sectors and will serve as a conduit to facilitate meaningful pilot and customer engagements between promising startups and key Industry customers. Internally, this position will work closely with LACI’s Unlocking Innovation and Enhancing Community teams to identify promising early stage cleantech companies and support them in developing, piloting, and deploying their technologies. The Director of Transportation will stay current on market trends and educate LACI and the broader ecosystem on relevant policy, regulatory, technology, and Industry trends via internal briefings, white papers, thought leadership events, etc. This position requires significant relationship development and management as well as familiarity with the clean energy / transportation sectors and policies.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop a mobility and clean transportation ecosystem assessment and stakeholder engagement strategy
  • Shepherd the input and collaboration process for the LARoadmap to 2028 Zero Emissions
  • Support and expand the transportation electrification or CTI initiative by cultivating new partnerships, developing compelling programming, and overseeing marketing and outreach communications
  • Help source, vet, recruit, and select early stage clean transportation / mobility company applicants to LACI’s programs
  • Provide annual market landscape assessments to the Unlocking Innovation team and support LACI’s startup selection due diligence

Requirements:

  • Basic understanding of clean power and energy efficiency technologies, including renewable energy, battery storage, vehicle to grid integration (VGI), and enabling technologies

Food Tripping App internships with SHFT.com

SHFT.COM is actively looking for students interested in an internship to help with the Food Tripping App which helps users find more healthy options while on the road. We’re embarking on the app’s second iteration, currently in development with coders.  Perfect for Food Systems program students and others.  Undergrads and grad students welcome.

Job description: Managing data (entering new entries, purging bad entries, vetting user-generated suggestions) around restaurants, farmers markets, juice and coffee spots, artisan food, artisan drink, and possibly adding regenerative food category). Helpful to have some IT background, but more than anything an interest in helping users find healthier choices when on the road and un-aware of the options in the area.  It is a free app that launched four years ago and we are currently developing enhancements to functionality and cleaned up fresh data.

Roughly 6-10 hours a week working remotely with direction and help via email and phone. There is great flexibility as to when the work is done.  We’ll have a weekly delivery of clean data, so students can work on their own schedule.

There is no pay or stipend budget at this time, other than our sincere gratitude, but there is opportunity for a future paid job in maintaining the app after re-launch.  The app is a free download, but we intend to attach a sponsor which would provide us with a budget to make hires in the future.

There is an opportunity to stay on after V2 is launched to help promote among student community, to help vet user-generated suggestions, and generally keep the app fresh and current.
