CSUN Associated Students – Sustainability Coordinator
Under general supervision of the Senior Program Coordinator – Productions, the Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for providing administrative and program leadership and ensures that the department upholds and works towards finding new, innovative and economically reductive ways to minimize waste and recycle whenever possible. The incumbent develops, implements and monitors waste reduction and educational strategies; identifies and undertakes necessary steps to apply for grant sources and incentives; is responsible for communicating plans to the Senior Program Coordinator – Productions; coordinates recycling and resource recovery educational and publicity efforts with Senior Program Coordinator – Productions and with AS Marketing; markets and promotes AS sustainability efforts through social media, website maintenance, brochures, newsletters, and other promotional materials; prepares the annual budget request and oversees all expenditures of the education and outreach aspects of the Sustainability and Recycling program; oversees waste and recycling audits, research and other special projects (e.g., waste audits, Sustainable Office Program) related to education-centered sustainability matters; oversees, maintains, and procures inventory of office supplies, equipment, and materials; and performs other duties as assigned.
Earthworks – Stop The Buildout Fellow (6-Month Position)
Earthworks is excited to launch a new fellowship program to bring new leaders into the movement to challenge the fossil fuel industry and work towards a just, clean, and equitable energy economy for all.
The Stop The Buildout Fellowship is a paid, full-time 6-month position that includes mentorship, training, and the opportunity to work with Earthworks’ team in challenging new oil, gas, and petrochemical infrastructure along the US Gulf Coast. This fellowship will focus on intersecting issues of energy infrastructure development, climate change, public health, and environmental justice.
This position works closely with Earthworks’ program staff who work to reduce risks to water, health, air, and climate from oil and gas production, with our communication, digital and development departments, and will participate in regional and national coalition efforts to challenge oil, gas, and petrochemical expansion.
The Stop The Buildout Fellow will report to Earthworks’ Energy Infrastructure Campaigner and will join our energy program which includes federal policy experts, communications staff, development staff and a field advocate team active in Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania and California.
LA Clean Tech Incubator – Energy Program Director
The Director of Energy’s primary objective is to build, connect and support the clean energy entrepreneur ecosystem throughout Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles and Orange Counties. The Director of Energy will effectively convene and link entrepreneurs, researchers, universities, technologists, engineers, municipalities, corporations, and local and county government staff to assess the regional energy needs and encourage and accelerate clean energy technology commercialization to address those needs.
The Director will engage clean energy researchers and entrepreneurs, build a robust network of business and technical services referrals, and catalyze a portfolio of early stage clean energy program entrepreneurs. This position requires relationship development and management as well as a familiarity with the clean energy sector and clean energy entrepreneurship.

The University Relations Manager will be responsible for developing and executing a results-driven university relations strategy with universities and academic institutions in the LA region and beyond. Environmental Sustainability Advisor at SoCalGas
The position is responsible for supporting the ongoing development, growth and expansion of the SoCalGas Sustainability program. Intern, Rewrite the Future, Partnerships Team, Communications Dept., Natural Resources Defense Council
NRDC is seeking an intern to work with NRDC’s Rewrite the Future team and Media Team in our Santa Monica office. This will be a part-time paid position (or a position for school credit) running approximately 5/26/20 – 8/21/20.
This position would assist the team in their work to encourage more and varied climate-related stories in TV, film, and other popular entertainment. We believe the arts and entertainment culture have a key role to play in revising unhelpful climate narratives and perspectives that are hindering our timely response to the crisis.
The intern would help expand and organize various facets of the program, including performing research to help target outreach, create a tracking system for our projects and resources, help produce industry events, and support our climate story consulting.
The intern will also support the National Media Team based in the Santa Monica office. He/she will be responsible for monitoring news stories, identifying news outlets and reporters for NRDC to collaborate with, and conducting occasional research on a number of topics related to staff projects. The intern will also be asked to support local social media efforts.

Student Position: Sustainable LA Grand Challenge Graphic Design and Digital Content Specialist
The Sustainable LA Grand Challenge is looking for a graphic design and digital content specialist to help promote the vision of SLA GC through multi-media products. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, tech-savvy, self-motivated, and passionate about driving social and environmental change through visual storytelling and communication. Starting pay rate is $17.00/hour. Must be available to dedicate a minimum of 12 hours per week. Work study not required. Initial appointment is through June 2020, but renewal is possible with satisfactory performance.
The graphic design and digital content specialist will report to the SLA GC program administrator, in close coordination with the communications and PR manager of the SLA GC and other members of the team based on need and “assignments.”
Objectives
- Create and edit content for SLA GC’s social media platforms and website including short videos and graphics.
- Support SLA GC staff design needs, including the creation of one-pagers, flyers, event invitations, newsletters, and graphics for reports and grant proposals.
- Contribute to the design and layout of UCLA Sustainable LA Grand Challenge Sustainability Report Card for Los Angeles County, which may include:
- Managing and organizing report graphics, photos, charts, maps, and tables.
- Designing and/or developing infographics, charts, maps, and tables from source files (typically originated in Word, Excel, or ARC-GIS), and other designed elements as necessary.
Required Qualifications
- Proficient in video recording technology and video editing software
- Proficient in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, and eager to continually improve technical skills.
- Knowledge of best practices for video content production.
- Keen design sense and ability to think critically and provide creative input.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Capacity to take ideas and concepts and produce designed products such as infographics and other graphic elements to visually display complex information and data.
- Aptitude to learn quickly and manage multiple tasks. Time management skills are a must with the ability to pace work to meet established deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and with a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience producing original videos that support an organization’s communication strategy
- Experience with designed publications, such as magazines, reports, or print material with a web interface.

Sustainability Specialist, CR&R
Position Description: Sustainability Specialist
The primary function of this position is to support CR&R in the planning, development and execution of waste diversion and recycling programs with the ultimate goal of compliance with regulations for municipal solid waste collection, recycling and disposal contracts assigned by CR&R.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain the established tracking, monitoring and reporting for municipal contract compliance.
- Work effectively with city staff and consultants to ensure contract compliance.
- Interface with residents, commercial/industrial customers, civic/non-profit/community members, governmental agencies’ staff, school officials, media and members of the general public on service issues and/or concerns.
- Ability to “sell” recycling programs and maintain participation of programs.

- Prepare monthly, quarterly, annual progress reports for cities.

The Director of Energy’s primary objective is to build, connect and support the clean energy entrepreneur ecosystem throughout Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles and Orange Counties. The Director of Energy will effectively convene and link entrepreneurs, researchers, universities, technologists, engineers, municipalities, corporations, and local and county government staff to assess the regional energy needs and encourage and accelerate clean energy technology commercialization to address those needs.
The Director will engage clean energy researchers and entrepreneurs, build a robust network of business and technical services referrals, and catalyze a portfolio of early stage clean energy program entrepreneurs. This position requires relationship development and management as well as a familiarity with the clean energy sector and clean energy entrepreneurship.
Responsibilities:

Director of Transportation, LA Cleantech Incubator (LACI)
Position Summary
As part of our Market Transformation team, LACI is seeking a Director of Transportation to build and expand LACI’s transportation and mobility related activities, and advance LACI’s transportation electrification and zero emissions goods movement initiative (aka, LACI Center for Transportation Innovation).
As part of LACI’s mission to create an inclusive green economy, LACI’s work to accelerate transportation electrification and zero emissions goods movement is being integrated across the organization, including in the organization’s Unlocking Innovation program (e.g., supporting portfolio companies that advance transportation electrification) and Enhancing Communities program (e.g., piloting zero emissions mobility technologies in disadvantaged communities).
Central to the Director of Transportation role is helping manage the LACI transportation electrification initiative, or LACI Center for Transportation Innovation (CTI). LACI is convening and facilitating a top tier group of regional, state, and Industry stakeholders with the goal of dramatically accelerating the Los Angeles region’s transition to a zero emission, shared, and electric transportation future by 2028. The Director of Transportation will play a critical role in shaping and launching LACI’s related programming and managing and growing LACI’s related partnerships.
The Director of Transportation will also serve as LACI’s internal subject matter expert on the mobility and transportation sectors and will serve as a conduit to facilitate meaningful pilot and customer engagements between promising startups and key Industry customers. In Washington D.C., a FUSE fellow will partner with the City Administrator to help establish a coalition of cities that will create evidence-based practices and a new framework for violent-crime reduction through non-law enforcement-based, compassionate interventions.

Summer opportunity to work on Planet Innovation Podcast
Summer research Internship position with the team of Planet Innovation Podcast at UCLA. The internship will be located at the UCLA Center for Corporate Environmental Performance within the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability.
This is a non-paid internship during which the intern is expected to provide 20-40 hours per week during the June 15, 2018 to August 30, 2018 period, with a minimum of 4 weeks.
We anticipate that the intern will conduct the following tasks:
• Research various subjects related to business sustainability to prepare Podcast scripts and interviews.
• Select and contact science experts and entrepreneurs for interviews.
• Transcribe interviews, and select most useful segments for inclusion in the podcast.

ESPY Green Team Positions (ESPN Awards)
Thank you for your interest in working for Kilowatt Events at the 2018 ESPYS Award Show. ESPN strives to significantly reduce the environmental impacts of its owned events, as evidenced by the sustainability achievements of its annual award show over the past decade, which include zero waste to landfill and carbon neutrality. The show relies on a dedicated green team staff to help meet sustainability performance goals in categories such as waste management, material recovery, responsible water usage, and carbon offsets. The following is a detailed job description for the ESPYs green team position.
Location: Microsoft Theater, Downtown Los Angeles
Dates: July 13th-20th, 2018 (One weekend day off)
Hours: 8-12 hours/day
Pay: $16/hr Green Team Coordinator, $20/hr Green Team Manager

Job Duties:
- Attend pre-event conference call(s) for program planning and design.
- Engage in eco-education efforts and communicate program initiatives to guests and staff.
- Execute waste diversion efforts from landfill, including pre- and post-event.
- Set up and sort waste at ancillary events and the ESPYS golf tournament.
- Place and refill water coolers to prevent plastic bottle waste.
- Sort through waste bags before placing them in correct bins.
Attire:
To comply with the professionalism necessary for this event, Green Team staff must adhere to the following rules. Clothing should be comfortable and may get soiled from the nature of the work. Work gloves and sorting supplies provided. It will be very warm at the event, and some of the work will be outside. Bring sunglasses, sunscreen, water bottle (we will have refill stations).

Green Team staff members must be passionate about sustainability, with prior work experience either in CESR or sustainable event management a plus. Must be able to execute physical labor tasks (e.g., lift 40+ lbs), be prepared to get a little dirty from waste sorting activities, be able to withstand warm weather in outdoor environments, and be comfortable on your feet for the majority of the working day. Must be able to communicate clearly and in a friendly demeanor to educate others on our environmental initiatives. Must be able to take initiative with minimal supervision at times.

The Director of Ocean Policy will lead the Ocean Policy team’s work to develop and execute national and regional strategies and campaigns to further American Progress’ ocean policy, climate change, and clean energy goals. The Director of Ocean Policy is responsible for developing, researching, and writing major reports; creating strategies to promote the value of science-based management initiatives; establishing and managing coalitions of national and regional partner organizations; implementing communications strategies; and developing relationships and partnerships with ocean champions on Capitol Hill and within the federal government. The ideal candidate will be an experienced team leader with deep organizational relationships throughout the ocean policy world, as well as a deep understanding of ocean issues, politics, and science.
The Ocean Policy team at American Progress focuses on developing science-based policy goals and finding solutions that promote growth of the sustainable blue economy, defined as industries that either depend on or contribute to healthy oceans and coasts. Since the program’s inception in 2011, this focus has led the team to engage in significant work on sustainable fishery management; offshore renewable energy development; coastal restoration and resiliency; and recreation and tourism. Water Resources and Policy Initiatives Intern
The California Center for Sustainable Communities (CCSC) at UCLA exists to create actionable science that improves the sustainability of urban systems. We aim to provide intellectual and conceptual frameworks for new synthesis and thinking in sustainability research for all Californians.
CCSC is partnering with CSU campuses to offer a Water Resources and Policy Initiatives internship at UCLA. Funded by Proposition 1, this internship focuses on offering undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to assist with projects related to water in disadvantaged communities.
Responsibilities include gathering information on Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s drought programs by researching water restrictions, tracking water rate changes, and investigating the efficacy of rebate programs.
This is a paid, part-time internship on the UCLA campus for 10-15 hours weekly. Undergraduate students are paid $12.50/hour, and graduate students are paid $15.00/hour. Schedule is flexible.

SHFT.COM is actively looking for students interested in an internship to help with the Food Tripping App which helps users find more healthy options while on the road. We’re embarking on the app’s second iteration, currently in development with coders. Perfect for Food Systems program students and others. Undergrads and grad students welcome.
Job description: Managing data (entering new entries, purging bad entries, vetting user-generated suggestions) around restaurants, farmers markets, juice and coffee spots, artisan food, artisan drink, and possibly adding regenerative food category). Helpful to have some IT background, but more than anything an interest in helping users find healthier choices when on the road and un-aware of the options in the area. It is a free app that launched four years ago and we are currently developing enhancements to functionality and cleaned up fresh data.
Roughly 6-10 hours a week working remotely with direction and help via email and phone. There is great flexibility as to when the work is done. We’ll have a weekly delivery of clean data, so students can work on their own schedule.
There is no pay or stipend budget at this time, other than our sincere gratitude, but there is opportunity for a future paid job in maintaining the app after re-launch. The app is a free download, but we intend to attach a sponsor which would provide us with a budget to make hires in the future.
There is an opportunity to stay on after V2 is launched to help promote among student community, to help vet user-generated suggestions, and generally keep the app fresh and current.
