California’s Climate Future: Water and the Sierra Nevada

Over the past few years, Californians saw firsthand the consequences of hotter-than-normal temperatures and a smaller-than-normal Sierra Nevada snowpack—historically low reservoir levels, dying trees and increased wildfire risk, to name a few. You may be wondering, “If things are like this now, what will they be like in the future, as our climate continues to change?”

UCLA Professor Alex Hall and his research team have set out to understand just how climate change will impact the mountain landscapes we love and the snowpack California depends on for water. Using innovative techniques, the team has produced first-of-their-kind projections that capture the intricate physical processes affecting climate in the Sierra.
