Performing the South in Watts: Black Expression at the Intersection of Food and the Sonic

In collaboration with the Department of African American Studies and the Ralph J. Bunche Center at UCLA, we invite you to join us for a short film screening and conversation titled “Performing the South in Watts: Black Expression at the Intersection of Food, Religion, and the Sonic.” with Dr. Derek Hicks of Wake Forest University. Dr. Hicks will be joined in conversation by UCLA Professor Dr. Terence Keel to reflect on growing up in Watts, CA, through the lens of food, religion, and the Black migration.

Dr. Hicks is an Associate Professor of Religion and Culture at Wake Forest University’s School of Divinity. His teaching and research span African American religion, religion in North America, race, the body, religion and foodways, theory and method in the study of religion, and cultural studies.
