Workshop: Accelerating Electric Vehicle Adoption with Curb Management
August 10, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Join the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) on Thursday August 10, from 10am to 12pm PDT for Accelerating EV Adoption with Automated Curb Management Strategies Workshop.
Cities across the nation are working to reduce transportation emissions and encourage the adoption of zero emission vehicles, even as pollution and traffic congestion associated with e-commerce deliveries and rideshare driving is increasing.
This virtual workshop will share early lessons from a U.S. Department of Energy Vehicle Technologies Office (DOE VTO) grant that LACI is administering together with partners in local government, startups, academia, community orgs, and more to scale zero emission delivery zones via applications and integration of curb management in Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, and Santa Monica. The workshop programming will:
- Showcase technical and policy-based curb management frameworks developed by Carnegie Mellon University, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, University of Southern California METRANS, and Cityfi
- Feature conversations between city agencies and LACI startup Automotus, which is helping cities manage the rapid rise in commercial vehicle activity using fully automated solutions, and
- Facilitate discussions on future pilot efforts as well as the curb management challenges and opportunities that are taking place in other cities.
Please register to receive the workshop Zoom URL. Zoom details and login instructions will be sent via email in the days prior to the event.
ABOUT THE EV PILOT STUDY
This pilot study to improve curb management strategies that will bolster EV adoption for last mile delivery, reduce air pollution in disadvantaged communities and environmental justice areas, and increase productivity at the curb. The pilot also serves as a cleantech demonstration opportunity for automated curb management solutions utilizing Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology that can empower cities to reduce emissions and traffic congestion and increase safety in communities.
Now at the midway point of the pilot study, LACI and our project partners invite city transportation departments and other interested stakeholders across the country to learn more about our initial learnings, and tools and resources created by project partners. We will also share information on LACI’s newly-announced Zero Emission Delivery City Challenge and how cities can apply to get involved in our first cohort.
ZERO EMISSIONS DELIVERY CITY CHALLENGE RFI
As another expansion of LACI’s work on zero emissions delivery with Santa Monica, LACI released the Zero Emissions Delivery City Challenge RFI, which aims to identify an additional 5-7 U.S. cities with which to pilot zero emission delivery solutions by 2025.
Cities selected from the RFI process will be part of a national network that shares lessons learned and new ideas, works together to attract funding, and collaborates to problem solve for the electrification of delivery systems in different city constructs. While this RFI is a separate initiative from this webinar, the two opportunities provide a great example of how cities will benefit from being a part of the Zero Emissions National Network to share tools, resources and lessons learned that will support accomplishing Zero Emission Transportation goals .
WORKSHOP AGENDA
10:00a – 10:15a: Workshop Overview & Introductions – LACI will set the stage for the event by going over the agenda, objective and have introductions with all attendees in the room.
10:15a – 10:25a: Overview of VTO Project Accomplishment – LACI staff will provide a background overview on the project, its goals and milestones, partnerships and its ambitions later this year and next.
10:25a – 10:30a: Presentation on Zero Emissions Delivery City Challenge – LACI Staff will present on Zero Emission Delivery City Challenge, what the RFI Opportunity was and how the challenge will help support cities in delivery system electrification.
10:30a – 10:55a: Presentation on Metric Methodology, ALPR Resources, & Tools – VTO partners Cityfi and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) will provide a presentation on Metric Methodology, standard and elected metrics last mile EV adoption and ALPR Tools.
10:55a – 11:30a: Presentation on ALPR technology, Modeling Approach, & Policy Structure – Partners Automotus, the City of LA, the City of Santa Monica, and the City of Pittsburgh present on ALPR technology, modeling approach, policy structure and how each city is working on enforcement.
11:30a – 12:00p: Break Out Discussions – An opportunity for the cities to network amongst each other and for us to learn a bit more about their challenges and what resources should be included in the roadmap.
